G-R rumbles into playoffs with rout of Warriors

FAIRBANK – Gladbrook-Reinbeck tied a bow atop its second consecutive unbeaten district championship as the fourth-ranked Rebels walloped Wapsie Valley 49-6 in Friday’s regular-season finale.

The Class A No. 4-ranked Rebels (8-1, 6-0) scored on each of six possessions in the first half and added another on their opening drive of the second half to put away the Warriors (4-5, 3-3) with ease.

Austin Lott intercepted a pass on Wapsie Valley’s first play from scrimmage and Eric Stoakes toted the pigskin into the end zone from 45 yards out two plays later to get G-R in motion.

Stoakes finished with 15 carries for 179 yards and four first-half touchdowns, and Jake Schuman’s only two receptions went for touchdowns of 13 and 78 yards from Camden Kickbush as the Rebels rolled to a 42-6 halftime advantage.

Kainen Hendricks tacked on a 2-yard touchdown plunge in the third quarter to close out the scoring.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck outgained its hosts 510-115 in total offense, averaging 11.3 yards per play. Kickbush finished 5-for-7 for 178 yards and no interceptions, with Phillip Zimmerman hauling in a 45-yard pass and Colton Dinsdale catching a 40-yarder.

Kickbush also ran for 82 yards on just four attempts as the Rebels racked up 332 yards on the ground to avenge last year’s playoff loss to Wapsie Valley.

Jake Goeller led the Warriors with 67 yards rushing and a 4-yard touchdown.

Both teams will head to the playoffs as Wapsie Valley held the fourth and final position in District 4. Playoff pairings were announced after press time, however.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck will host its first-round game on Wednesday night at “The Pit” in Gladbrook at 7 p.m. This marks the fifth consecutive season with a playoff berth for the Rebels, and the ninth in a row for Wapsie Valley.
