Comet netters claim G-R tournament title
REINBECK – The BCLUW volleyball team turned in a perfect 4-0 day, sweeping aside its competition for the team title at the Gladbrook-Reinbeck Invitational on Saturday.
The Comets swept AGWSR (21-18, 21-11), GMG (21-6, 21-17) and North Butler (21-14, 21-13) before denying the host Rebels in the finals (22-20, 21-11).
Hannah Sams and Haley Veldhouse led BCLUW (10-6) with 19 kills on the day. Olivia Callaway totaled 16 kills and Nicole Montgomery had 15. Setter Bobbi Paper racked up 51 assists.
Sams also led the defense with five blocks, while Mallory Vawter totaled 21 digs.
Montgomery was 46-for-47 serving with six aces, and Sams was 17-for-17 with four aces for the Comets, who return to Reinbeck Tuesday for an NICL West Division clash with the Rebels.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck (8-5) had a 3-1 day that included wins over AGWSR (21-16, 13-21, 15-10), North Butler (21-17, 21-8) and GMG (21-3, 21-15).
Hayley Weber tallied a team-high 22 kills and Hanna Christopher finished with 19. Jenny Schildroth totaled 48 assists and was 43-for-43 sering with six aces.
Sydney Brown led the G-R defense with 24 digs, while Bailea Evenson had 18. Shelton Hatch totaled eight kills and was 31-for-34 serving with three aces, while Evenson racked up seven aces.
AGWSR finished 2-2 by beating North Butler (21-14, 21-15) and GMG (21-10, 21-6) for the team’s first wins of the season.
The Cougars were led by Ashley Sicard with 20 kills, while Alana Groninga had 16 and Megan Marlette totaled 14. Becca Wiarda ended up with 39 assists and Abbie Young added 17 more.
Reagan Rathe served 41-for-42 with six aces, Young was 32-for-34 with seven aces, and Wiarda was 23-for-25 with three aces.
Cortanie Nederhoff led the way with four blocks, while Mel Morones had 21 digs.
AGWSR (2-12) goes to Aplington-Parkersburg on Tuesday in NICL West play.
GMG went 0-4 on the day, falling to North Butler in three games, 21-13, 10-21, 15-10.
The Wolverines (2-10) were paced by Josie Claassen’s four kills, while Blaire Sonderleiter had three kills. Katie Airey totaled nine assists.
Defensively, Kendall Chandler led the team with 18 digs and Sonderleiter had 13. Chandler and Hannah Hinson both had one block. Airey was 19-for-19 serving with two aces.
The Wolverines are off until Thursday’s home match with Meskwaki Settlement in Iowa Star Conference action.
Trojans win one at Waukee
WAUKEE – The West Marshall volleyball team went 1-2 in pool play before falling in the first round of consolation play Saturday at the Waukee Tournament.
The Trojans lost to Urbandale (21-6, 21-12) and Bedford (21-11, 21-12) but topped Madrid (21-13, 21-17). Des Moines Lincoln ended West Marshall’s day, 26-24, 23-25, 15-9.
Morgan Hopper led the Trojans with 21 kills and Gabby Reyerson had 10. Madi Stalzer finished with 39 assists.
Mackenzie Coberley paced the defense with 35 digs and Nicole Riemenschneider had 28 more. Reyerson tallied eight blocks and Kailyn Reese had seven.
Coberley served 28-for-30 with seven aces, and Riemenschneider was 26-for-28 with eight aces. Stalzer went 30-for-32 with an ace, and Hopper was 18-for-19 with five aces.
The Trojans (4-15) go on the road to face Class 2A No. 5 Grundy Center in NICL West Division action Tuesday.
