Freshman – sophomore Rebel football
It was a Thursday in early September and the Rebels traveled north to Dike for the third time in 6 days to take on the Wolverines in a Fresh-Soph contest. We had just been here on Monday and had to shorten the game do to lightning but this night turned out to be a beauty.
The first quarter of the game was played very sloppily. Neither team could muster much of anything on either side of the ball. We would move down the field and then fumble. DNH would take over and do the same. It just started out as one of those nights where we would threaten and then shoot ourselves in the foot with a mistake. The second quarter is where we took over and scored on 3 successive drives to grab an 18 0 lead right before the half. We then relaxed a bit and gave up a long TD pass with 3 seconds to go to cut our halftime lead to 18-8. Walker Thede scored on two touchdown runs and also connected with Alex Tscherter for another score to account for our points.
The second half was played much better by both squads as each team found their identity and competed against one another. Walker hit Matt Johannsen on a 9 yard score to extent our lead to 26-8 heading into the 4th quarter. DNH added an early 4th quarter score which would hold as the final and the Rebels grabbed their first win of the 2014 season. The final score was 26-14.
Gage Murty led the way with 163 yards rushing and 21 receiving. Walker finished with 36 yards on the ground and 124 through the air for 4 TDs. Josh Saak added 30 yards rushing and 37 receiving. Matt caught 1 ball for 21 yards and a TD. Alex grabbed 2 catches for 19 yards and a score. Caden Kickbush grabbed our last completion for 26 yards to round out our offense. Defensively Josh led us with 7 tackles followed by Walker with 5 and Gage and Mason Skovgard with 4. Dmitriy Strohbehn and Kyle Koppen 3, Josh Peterson, John Edler, and Joseph Pepe 2, Matt, Caden, Spencer Goos, Owen Beach, Will Blakesley, and Bryce Schick each added a tackle to our total. Walker and Gage each had an interception and Kyle, John, Gage, and Seth Gretillat each recovered a fumble.
We certainly have some things that need to be cleaned up but it is all fixable. We will continue to work hard and get better. Our next F-S action will be Thursday October 2 against the West Marshall Trojans. That game will kick off at 6 p.m.. See you there.
