30 years ago April 27, 1990 In honor of Earth Day, several boys from Pack 394 planted a Crimson King Maple tree on the west side of the shelter house in the Garwin Park. Kathryn Kunch, council member heading the Parks Department, was on hand to help find a location for the tree. Thanks to Ralph Beck and his backhoe, digging was made easy. Leonard Boerm and Bill Faircloth placed the tree and the scouts helped put the dirt back into the hole and water/fertilize the tree. Those scouts involved were, Kyle Van Haaften, Justin McClenethen, Ryan Faircloth, Jason Faircloth, Matt Boerm, Peter Roberts, Joe Mathern, and Nathan Jones. Cousins Brock, Ben, Sam and Dan Goos took on a major project for their contribution to Earth Day observance. Due to soil erosion several trees had fallen into Wolf Creek behind Goos Implement creating a log jam. The boys put forth much time and effort to clean out the logs. Many had fallen roots and all into the stream. 40 years ago May 2, 1980 The Senior Sextet consisting of Chris Goos, Carma Horstmann, Lynn Schoel, Teresa Ulch, Dorcas Woebbeking, and Cheryl Wiese came home Saturday from State Music Contest with their fourth I rating. The sextet has been singing together six years. 50 years ago April 24, 1970 Mr. and Mrs. Richard Fleming, rural Gladbrook, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Carolyn, to Vaughn Kloster, son of Mr. and Mrs. Niels Kloster, Remsen. LaVern Oelschlager, 53, farmer northeast of Lincoln, passed away Tuesday evening of a heart attack. Born December 7, 1916, the son of Fred and Sophia Schumann Oelschlager at Posser, Nebraska. He received his education and grew to manhood in the area of his birth. On February 24, 1939, he was united in marriage to Leona Uden. The moved to Gladbrook in 1940 and in 1952 moved to their present home. Dr. and Mrs. Richard Rice, Des Moines, became the parents of a daughter, Debra Ann, born April 16. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Raynard Delfs of Garwin and Mr. and Mrs. Modell Rice of Collins. 60 years ago April 22, 1960 Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Shemenski of Martins Ferry, Ohio, announce the engagement of their daughter, Karen, to Curtis Ohrt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ohrt of Gladbrook. A fall wedding is planned. The two-story farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Storjohann, located about five miles southwest of Gladbrook, was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon. Origin of the blaze was undetermined. Mr. and Mrs. Storjohann were both working in the field Tuesday and when Mrs. Storjohann returned to the house about 3 p.m. discovered the home in flames. The Gladbrook fire department was called, but it was to late to save the dwelling, however, the fire was checked from spreading to the farm buildings. The Storjohann’s daughter was in school at the time. The senior class will present “Lets Face It”, a three-act comedy on April 26. 70 years ago April 21, 1950 The Gladbrook High School music groups batted 100% at the preliminary contests at Tama last week and will go to Charles City this weekend to enter the state music contest. All three large groups, the concert band, mixed chorus, and girls’ glee club received Division I ratings at Tama. Henry Harms was severely bitten by a police dog Monday when he stopped at a farm house near Blessing, Iowa. Harms had gone to the house to talk to the owner when he accidentally touched the dog’s dish of food with his foot. B. Lutz, of Waterloo, became owners of Wolfcreek Cash Grocery and immediately took over its management. In honor of their 25th wedding anniversary, Sunday, April 21, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Goettsch held an open house. The Gideons have just placed the largest order for new Bibles in all their history. The Bibles are to be distributed in hospitals, hotels, jails, and schools. Two hundred and fifty thousand is the total number ordered for this purpose-the greatest number in the forty-two years of the Gideon endeavor. 90 years ago April 25, 1930 Sunday morning, Harry Moeller, young farmer living on the G. C. Greve farm, two miles south and east of Gladbrook, died following an illness of measles and pneumonia. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Moeller of Beaman. The junior class will present “Fifty-fifty”, a three act play of love, luck, and laughter on May 2 and 3 in the school gym. According to the report filed by A. W. Broeker, census taker for the town of Lincoln, that village has a population of 162.
