30 years ago April 20, 1990 E. Lynn Reinhard, Gladbrook, was the lucky winner of $500 on Wed. April 18 when he purchased a “Winner Take All” Lottery ticket at the Gladbrook Bowl. The Community Women’s Club served 51 area merchants for a luncheon Monday at the Memorial Building in honor of Merchant’s Appreciation Day. Kimberly Konicek, Toledo, and Scott Nekola, Toledo, are happy to announce their engagement and approaching marriage. Parents of the couple are Phyllis Konicek, Garwin and Steve and Karla Nekola, Tama. 40 years ago April 25, 1980 The hot, spicy Duesseldorfer Mustard is the hottest item being sold for the Centennial. More and more orders keep coming in. To date 238 cases or 7500 jars have been sold. Elvertus Ploen who worked in Gladbrook’s mustard factory in 1932-34 is the chairman of the project. Gladbrook High School will hold their combined Baccalaureate and Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 18. Dr. Richard Manatt of Iowa State University will give the commencement address “It Hardly Seems Possible.” If you were driving on Highway 96 east of Gladbrook on Saturday you could see an unusual sight to the north. They were Willy Gethmann and Jim Kray sowing oats with horses. Willy borrowed Collin Randall’s wagon and Jim Kray’s horses to do the job. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie W. Bern are announcing the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Marlis Elaine, to Larry Michael Helland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie M. Helland, Polk City. Julie Ann Cutler and Daniel Louis Upah exchanged marriage vows on Saturday, April 9 at St. Boniface Church in Garwin. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Cutler Sr. of Garwin and Mr. and Mrs. Frances L. Upah of Garwin. Mike and Cathy Vint, Marshalltown, are the parents of a son, Matthew Dean, born March 31. Matthew weighed eight pounds six ounces. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Dean Vint, Garwin and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hyduk of Cedar Rapids. 50 years ago April 17, 1970 Army Private Ryan P. Busch, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth J. Busch, Gladbrook, recently completed military police training at Ft. Gordon, GA. Pvt. Busch entered into the Army in October of 1969 and completed basic training at Ft. Gordon. The “Bowl Down Cancer” tournament was held at Gladbrook Bowl the week of April 5th. The tournament helped raise $70.80 for the Ameican Cancer Society. Denny Sienknecht came in first place in the Men’s Division. Doris Beichley was first place in the Women’s Division. The four schools in the Mid-Iowa Conference that compete in girls’ track participated in a quadrangular held at Conrad, April 9. Gladbrook finished in second place. Doris Thede was a double winner for Gladbrook as she ran to a first plan in both the 100 yard dash and 220 yard dash. She tied her own record in winning the 220 with a time of 28.4. 60 years ago April 15, 1960 Gladbrook High School musicians earned 12 Division I ratings at the Class C State Contest for Solo-Ensemble groups held here last weekend. Two Gladbrook students at the State University of Iowa earned a straight “A” grade average for the first semester. Dean Otto, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Otto, a junior, and Gayle Appelgate, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Appelgate, a freshman. This was the third straight semester that Otto attained an “A” average. A very pretty wedding took place Saturday afternoon in the Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook when Alice Goos, RN, Waterloo, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Goos of Gladbrook, became the bride of Worth L. Condor Jr., Iowa Falls, son of Mr. and Mrs. Worth L. Condor Sr. of Vinton. 70 years ago April 14, 1950 Marlys Harmsen, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Harmsen, and Vernon Boege, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Boege of Gladbrook were married Wednesday morning at St. Boniface Catholic Church at Garwin. A dinner was served for about seventy guests at the Garwin Legion Hall at noon. A wedding dance was held at Forrest Park Ballroom in Marshalltown Wednesday evening and was attended by a large crowd. J. O. King this week reports the sale of the Alvin Clausen house, now rented by Mrs. Anna Putney, to Harry Siemens for $3,700. Mr. and Mrs. Al Reinhard became the new owners of the Sunnyside Cafe this week when they purchased it from Mr. and Mrs. Fred Caster. The new owners are residents of Gladbrook. Mrs. Reinhard has worked at the cafe for sometime. Mr. Reinhard is also working at the cafe now. Mayor L. H. Thomsen and all members of the city council were sworn in last week as they began serving new two-year terms. Council members are I. H. Wentzien, Kenneth Gethmann, Wm. Murray, Carl Eilers and Otto Schroeder. The council rehired Wendell Ladehoff as Street Commissioner and Herman Gloe as Water Commissioner. Dr. L. G. Schaeferle was named Health Officer, W. L. Stewart was re-appointed Town Clerk and D. B. Kliebenstein was named City Attorney. 80 years ago April 19, 1940 Death claimed Gladbrook’s oldest businessman Monday morning when C. W. Davenport passed away at his home following an illness of about four months. Mr. Davenport had been in active business until November 30, 1939, when his health failed. Mr. and Mrs. Davenport observed their 62nd wedding anniversary last May. During the past year the number of homesteads has remained at 198 in Gladbrook according to the records of assessor Jake Dunbar. Sunday afternoon the Evangelical parsonage was the scene of a very pretty wedding when Miss Alice Landt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hannes Landt, became the bride of Raymond Hamann, son of Fritz Hamann. George Koster, recently elected mayor of Gladbrook met with the town council last Friday evening and tendered his resignation in that capacity. Stating simply “I do not care to serve as mayor any longer.” The resignation was accepted and the council appointed W. B. King to act as mayor. 90 years ago April 18, 1930 Some sneak thief visited the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Thomspon, one-half mile east of Gladbrook Sunday evening and carried off a good set of work harness. Mr. Thompson has scouted around a little and has a good line on the party who stole the harness and says that if it is returned he will carry the case no farther. Mr. Thompson has had his share of bad luck in the past and the loss of the harness at this time creates a burden that he does not care to assume.
