30 years ago March 30, 1990 Ann Koster, daughter of Stan and Sue Koster, has been selected to represent the Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary at the 1990 Girls State to be held in June at the UNI campus. Sara Livingston, daughter of John and Jean Livingston, was selected as alternate. Both girls are juniors at Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School. Ms. Irene Rank and Mr. and Mrs. Barry Rank, all of Fort Dodge, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Traci, to Matthew Clausen, son of John and Pat Clausen of Gladbrook. A July 28th wedding is planned. A baby girl, Natalie Lynn Buskohl, was born to Angela and Jerry Buskohl, Lincoln, on Friday, March 23. She weighed 7 lbs. 12 oz. Grandparents are John and Gail Buskohl, Lincoln, and JoAnne Tiernan and the late Wm. Tiernan of Marshalltown. 40 years ago April 4, 1980 The 1980 Centennial Parade theme is “A Century of Memories,” submitted by Beverly Nolte of Garwin. She received 15 Gladbrook Trade Dollars for her winning entry. Thirty-one entries were received by three states. Mark Lowry was overall winner of the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby held Monday, March 31 at the Blue and Gold Banquet. 50 years ago March 27, 1970 Mr. and Mrs. William Kienzle, of Cedar Falls, formerly of the Lincoln-Gladbrook community, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary with an open house. Wm. Kienzle and Anne Kroeger were married April 1, 1920 in Marshalltown. The 5th and 6th Grades and Junior High Wrestling Tournament was held on Saturday, March 21. Champions are: 5th & 6th grades, 65-75 lbs. Randy Ramundt; 77-79 lbs. Kent Dierks; 81-86 lbs. Steve Osborn; 89-95 lbs. Brent Larsen; 96-105 lbs. Dave Denbow; 125 lbs. Jeff Schulz. Junior High Champions are: 78-90 lbs. David Christensen; 90-97 lbs. Steve Read; 98-102 lbs. Curt Ramundt; 102-109 lbs. Buck Jones; 112-114 lbs. Joel Mohr; 114-133 lbs. John Jindrich; 145-160 lbs. Ken Smith; Hwt. Don McGowan. 60 years ago March 25, 1960 Members of the 1960 State Champion Pantherettes were honored this week with selections to All-State Basketball teams. Judy Schade and Ginny Schmidt were named to the Iowa Daily Press Association 1st Team and Schmidt received the double honor of being named to Jack North’s Des Moines Register 1st Team. Schade was picked for North’s 2nd Team. Marcia Lynk was honored with placings on the 2nd Team by IDPA and 3rd Team by North. Donna Duft was picked for North’s 5th Team. JoAnn Hoppe and Pam Sonksen were both named to the Honor Roll by North. Dennis Rehder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Rehder, who was chief photographer for the yearbook “The Hawkeye” last year has been appointed editor for next year. Mr. and Mrs. Vern Sonkens became the parents of a daughter born Saturday, March 12. She has been named Ramona Kay. Mrs. Margaret Barger announces the marriage of her granddaughter, Sharon K. Harms to Gordon Hatch at the Presbyterian parsonage in Cedar Rapids on Friday, March 18 with Rev. Beal officiating. Mr. Hatch will be inducted into the army April 6 and Mrs. Hatch will live with Mrs. Barger.


70 years ago March 24, 1950 Dick Street, owner of City Motors, was awarded a plaque by Kaiser-Fraiser Corporation Monday for having the largest percentage of increase in new car sales. He also won a new Kaiser Traveler. Leonard A. Dahms, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Dahms of Gladbrook, received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State College in ceremonies held Friday, March 17. Maxine Politz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nis Jensen Jr. of Garwin and Paul Junge, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Junge of Gladbrook, were married Tuesday morning in the Evangelical and Reformed Church parsonage in Gladbrook. 80 years ago March 29, 1940 546 votes were cast Monday in the city election. Thirteen more than two years ago when the opposing ticket was made entirely of women. George Koester, incumbent Mayor received 269 votes while his opponent J. H. Wrage received 265 votes. Bob Goettsch, Gladbrook basketball guard, was named to the Des Moines Register Basketball All-State Honor Roll. 90 years ago March 28, 1930 The senior class has been working hard in preparing under the direction of Miss Marcelle Mowery, dramatic coach, of Traer, an exceptionally fine play entitled “Be An Optimist.” Also a new set of curtains and back drops have been installed on the stage by the classes of 1929 and 1930, which will help make the play a superior production.

30 years ago April 6, 1990 The Wm. M. Saunders Post #71 of the Garwin American Legion has selected Greg Cooling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Cooling of Garwin as their Boys State Representative. Saturday, March 17, Gail Sheridan and Gene Lucht were wed in the Garwin United Methodist Church. Gail is the daughter of Dean and Irene Sheridan of Burlington and Gene is the son of Herman and Ethel Lucht of Garwin. Garwin lumber of Garwin, was honored recently at an awards ceremony in Waterloo. The firm was recognized for its outstanding sales and service during 1989 and forty years as a Kent Feed Dealer. 40 years ago April 11, 1980 The Gladbrook Jaycee Ettes held their annual election Tuesday, April 8. The 1980-81 officers are: President, Jan Busch; Vice President, Deb McGowan; Secretary, Lisa Koester; Treasurer, Morgan Jurdan, and State Director, Sue Sperry. Services for Leonard Wayne Woehlk, 51, who died Tuesday at his home northeast of Garwin, were held April 11. Leonard was born January 23, 1929, near Garwin, the son of Alfred and Linda Luethje Woehlk. He attended country school and graduated from Garwin High School in 1946. On January 23, 1957, he was married to Shirley Dinsdale. Charlie and Susan Ericson of Cedar Rapids, became the parents of a son, born Easter Sunday, April 6. He has been named Dave Allan and weighed 6 lbs. 13 oz. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Ericson of Marshalltown and Mr. and Mrs. Verle Luethje of Garwin. 50 years ago April 3, 1970 Ending 22 years of business, Mr. and Mrs. Hazen Fallgater, of Gladbrook, handed over the keys to their store to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bearden, also of Galdbrook, who have purchased the store and officially took over April 1st. HM3 Kenneth Wiese U.S.N., arrived home Tuesday for a 30 day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Wiese. He has been serving the past year in Vietnam as a Medical Corpman with the 1st Marine Division.


60 years ago April 1, 1960 Nine teachers have resigned from the Gladbrook school system for the coming 1960-61 school term and eleven have signed their new contracts. Teachers who have accepted their new contracts include the following, Mrs. Bartelson, 1st grade; Mrs. L. H. Thomsen, 6th grade; Kent McIntyre, junior high; Dave Mace, junior high; Robert Witman, voc. ag and junior high science; Diane Kroeger, Home-Economics; Charles Wickersham, industrial arts; Ronald Rienka, principal; Mrs. Gates, English; Mrs. Buck, Primary, Lincoln; and Charles Barker, Superintendent. Shirley Kay Busch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Busch, became the bride Friday, March 25, of Ted K. Pemberton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Pemberton of Garwin. 70 years ago March 31, 1950 Gladbrook’s present mayor and councilmen were all re-elected at the town election Monday as 326 voters went to the polls. The only contest in the election was between Dr. L. H. Thomsen and Henry Harms, candidates for mayor. Thomsen polled 200 votes while Harms had 115. Berniece King was re-elected town treasurer with 276 votes. In Lincoln, Fred Sienknecht was re-elected mayor and Arlo Hansen, treasurer. Councilmen elected were Guy Mason, William Tessau, Carl Graves, Ervol Fink and Leland Gethamnn. Announcement was made this week that Del Williams has purchased the half interest of his brother, Wally, in the local Gamble Store. Wally has accepted employment with a Minneapolis wholesale hardware company as a salesman. Del will continue to operate the store. Thirteen Gladbrook students will enter the preliminary music contest to be held Friday and Saturday in Toledo. The contest is for solos and small group both vocal and instrumental . Those entered are Betty Wiese, Miriam Hansen, Jo Anne Gloe, Sally Lou Ames, Janyce Meggers, Carol Hauschildt, Dorothy Mussig, Doris Hooper, Irwin Wentzien, Robert Engel, Dick Thomsen, Barbara Seydel, Donny Gloe, and George Storjohann.


80 years ago April 5, 1940 Mrs. Arthur Lohse and daughter Barbara Jean returned home from the hospital Monday. Clarence Wiese, son of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Wiese, was very surprised on his 21st birthday when his father presented him with a new Chevrolet. A farewell party was given by members of the United Brethren Church Friday evening for Mr. and Mrs. Bob Malek, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Barger and Gilbert Henry, who left the first of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Malek and Mr. and Mrs. Barger left Monday for Independence where they will make their home. Mr. Malek recently acquired two theaters in that city and Mr. Barger will be the movie operator at one of the theaters. Gilbert Henry will leave the first of the week for a CCC Camp. 90 years ago April 4, 1930 The city election took place Monday while the battle was hotly contested but a few sore spots remain today. It was the hottest election held in Gladbrook in many years and a total of 429 votes were cast which is said to be a record mark for the city election. The citizen’s ticket, headed by John H. Wrage for mayor, won the contest over the opposition headed by A.H. Steffa for mayor by a vote of 288 to 136. The citizen’s ticket contained B. T. Harms, 270 votes; G. C. Greve, 205 votes; Theo Lage, 246; Wm. Mohr, 268; and K.P. Wieland 296, the high vote of the election. R. C. Allard on the people’s ticket was some race “boss” and defeated G. C. Greve by 252 to 205. Mr. Allard was the only candidate on the people’s ticket to be elected. The defeated candidates were Donald Fairchild, 126; George Koster, 180; J. W. Gethmann, 170; and Wm. Rowden, 130. Russel Freese, owner of half interest in the Sunnyside Cafe, sold out to John Harms, who has been employed in the Connor grocery. Perry Gentry and Mr. Harms will conduct the business in the future.
