10 Years Ago April 8, 2010 Alli Volkens is a national champion. She plays for Emporia State University. Jeralyn School of Dance held a recent recital. Ruby Mitchell, 86 died April 2 at Fort Madison. Richard Wood, 73 Reinbeck died April 2 at his home. Relay for Life will be held June 11. Robin Heise and Alex Holbach are the Verlyn Rysdam Award winners as outstanding femaleand male athletes. Mike Bearden wins Volunteer of the Year Award. 20 Years Ago April 6, 2000 Highway Cafe is razed to make way for a new Caseys. Edward Hoppe, Lincoln, died March 31 at Grundy Hospital. Margaret Eygabroad, 102, Wellsburg, died March 30 at Grundy Long Term Care. 30 Years Ago April 19, 1990 Sue Koster, Gladbrook Tag Teacher, was selected as the Invent Iowa Outstanding Teacher of the Year for Area Education Agency 6. Peggy Dixon and Bart Bartelmes were married February 2. Marty Martens, Gladbrook, of Reinbeck High School was named one of the Iowa Citizen Bee Regional Semi Finalists. Ruth Johnson,91 Reinbeck died April 12 of cancer. Henry Wesemen 76, Grundy Center died at his home on April 12 of natural causes. Mark Buseman, 20 Iowa Falls, died at his residence on April 13. Bernard Wiarda 88, Grundy Center died April 12 of natural causes. Funeral services were held for Jerry Peters 88 on April 17. Mr. and Mrs. Tim Wieben are parents of a son, born April 11. 40 Years Ago April 24, 1980 Doctor W.H. Verduyn will be recognized at a dinner on April 30 for his contribution to the training of Mayo Clinic medical students. Mr. and Mrs. Rick Storjohann, Altoona are parents of a son, born April 15. Chris Conrad is a member of the Wartburg College 1980 baseball squad as a pitcher/fielder. Funeral for Alfred Watson, 67 Gladbrook was held on April 21 at Peace United Church in Gladbrook. LeRoy Claussen, long time custodian at Grundy County Hospital, retired last week after serving for more than 25 years. Pat and Ed McCreery are announcing the opening of the drive-in for the summer season beginning April 25. 50 Years Ago April 23, 1970 The United Church of Christ sponsored a teen dance at the Reinbeck Memorial Building last Saturday night which turned into a series of fights and was closed down by Sheriff Dick Kern. As a result new rules will be set for teen dances. Rachel Strohbehn, daughter of Mr and Mrs Dale Strohbehn has been selected to attend American Legion Auxiliary Girls State. David Stoakes, son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Stoakes was awarded the Eagle Badge, highest Boy Scout rank at the United Methodist Church on April 19. Emma Lewis 88, died at Parkview Manor. Iwer Jacobsen, 83, died at his home in Traer. Minnie Morris, 80 died at the Grundy County Hospital. Three Sioux City men have been bound over to Black Hawk County District Court following charges of rape of a 14 year old Reinbeck girl last Saturday night.

10 YEARS AGO APRIL 15, 2010 Mark Rees, a Republican, is running for Iowa Congressional third Distract, which includes Grundy Co.. He is a retired artist and never has run for office before. He says “he believes in what he is doing and believes in himself”. Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Benson are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary on April 11. Ward Richards received his 25 year service award. He is employed as a motorgrader operator with the Secondary Road Dept. Greg Cavelier, owner of Greg’s Taxidermy in Aplington, recently competed in the Iowa Taxidermist Association 26th annual competition and show held in Marshalltown Daniel Billerbeck, 52, died April 9 at the Grundy Hospital. Joan Weiss Mehman, 78, died April 6 in Mason City Grundy Co. Hospital welcomes new surgeon, Dr, Steven Davis. April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month. 20 YEARS AGO APRIL 13, 2000 Reinbeck citizens will have the opportunity to vote on a cable referendum on May 9. Don Keith, 69, died April 8 at Allen Hospital. Dorothy Wilson, 79, died April 8 at Marshalltown Surigical Center. Raymond Greiner, 82, died April 9 at Allen Hospital from injuries received in an auto accident. Mr. & Mrs. Jim Tripp will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house on April 16. ‘Mr. & Mrs. David Volkens, Becksville, OH, are parents of a daughter born April 5. 30 YEARS AGO APRIL 26, 1990 Lillie Fahrenkrug, 96, Gladbrook, died April 17 from complications of pneumonia. Juluis Clar, 80, Gladbrook, died April 18. Margaret Clark, 82, Grundy Center, died April 14 at Covenant Med Center. Mr. & Mrs. Rick Lockhart are parents of a daughter born April 17. Pronto Market closed April 30 & May 1 for remodeling 40 YEARS AGO MAY 1, 1980 Janice Frier and Richard Sharp will be married on June 14 at United Church of Christ. Barbara Molstead and Ricky Wood were married on April 5 at United Church of Christ. Denise Billerbeck and David Freeman were married April 12 at United Church of Christ. Marlis Bern, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Leslie Bern of Gladbrook, has been named 1980 Secretary of the Year in the A.N., Palmer Chapter of the National Secretaries Association in Cedar Rapids. Mr. & Mrs. Wellwyn Poland will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary on May 4. Mr. & Mrs. James Kubik, Hudson, are parents of a daughter born April 12. 50 YEARS AGO APRIL 30, 1970 Gene Rottler, 50, Traer, died of a heart attack on April 26. Dennis Linder, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lester Linder, has been named Associate Editor of the Drake Law Review. Mae Cavanaugh died of a heart attack at her home in Voorhies on April 13. James Kvidera, 48, died at his farm home on April 25. LaVern Oelschlager, 53, died at Schoitz Hospital on April 28..
