The Gladbrook Fire Department was called to the Jindrich Bros. Meat Market at 5:45 a.m. Monday morning when Joe Enderlin, an apartment dweller in the Osborne Building awakened, smelled smoke and saw flames coming through the roof of the smokehouse, where the fire originated. It is believed that a piece of meat being smoked fell into the low bed of coal and started a flame which in turn caught the rest of the meat being cured on fire. While the fire was confined to the smokehouse, extensive damage from smoke ruined the painted walls, shelving, and will necessitate a thorough cleaning of all meat cases, furnishings, etc. The fire closed down the business and it will probably be around the middle of March before the business will be resumed. The freight train was traveling east as it was coming into Gladbrook and was approaching the crossing at a high rate of speed. Signal lights at the crossing were operating according to highway patrolmen who investigated the accident. M. L. DeVall, engineer, said Neil apparently saw the train but was unable to stop due to the icy road. The train carried the Neil car about 100 feet down the tracks, throwing Mr. Neil and his two daughters out of the car, killing them instantly. Mrs. Neil died several hours later at the hospital.
