30 yrs. ago March 2, 1990 Robin Sienknecht, 18, of Toledo, was killed Friday night in an accident just east of LeGrand. A Montour man was charged with OWI and involuntary manslaughter in the incident. Appointment of Christine A. Arp as Postmaster at Lincoln was announced by Thomas C. Johnson, Field Division General Manager/postmaster of the United States, effective February 24, 1990. Bruce and Mary Appelgate celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary in Las Vegas on February 15. Joining them at the Gold Coast for dinner were Dick & Jolene Denbow, Larry & Shirley Miell, Darrel & Caroline Groth, Marvin, Judy, and Myron Wendal, Carroll & Marlys Wegner and David & Jeannie Burt. Brad and Sherrie konicek, Marshalltown, are the parents of their first child, a daughter, Britnee Anne, born Feb. 26 at 10:30 a.m. Britnee weighed 8 lbs. 12 oz. and is 21 inches long. Grandparents are Larry & Judy Konicek, Garwin; Raynard Langenbau and the late Phyllis Langenbau, Gladbrook; and Jim Tilley, Marshalltown. Services were held for Dean T. Boldt, 60, who died Monday, February 26 of congestive heart failure, were held Thursday, March 1. He was born March 21, 1929 in Rockwell to August and Lucille Martin Boldt. He graduated from Toledo High School in 1947. On April 9, 1950, he married Deloris M. Conrad.
40 yrs. ago March 7, 1980 Gladbrook School announced that 23 entries at the District Speech Contest at Benton Community School received I ratings and will advance to state competition. Donald and Karen Havran of Toledo are the parents of a son, Craig Alan, born Wednesday, February 27. Craig weighed eight pounds five ounces. Maternal grandparents are Harold & Ruth Eernisse of Toledo, paternal grandmother is Mrs. Virgil Havran of Garwin. Jerry Rohach, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Rohach of Garwin, traveled to Georgia with Central College’s baseball team Feb. 23-March. Rohach a freshman at Central was one of 22 players earning a spot on the roster for the 10-game trip. Charles Jindrich, 82, of Gladbrook, died Wednesday evening. Born July 24, 1897, in Walford, Iowa, he was the son of Lawrence and Ann Bros Jindrich. On November 29, 1924 in Grundy Center he was married to Helen Baier. They spent their entire married life in Gladbrook where he owned and operated the Jindrich Meat Market until retirement March 1, 1962. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Koester of rural Gladbrook are the parents of a daughter, Amanda Kay, born Thursday, February 28. Amanda weighed 8 lbs. and will be welcomed home by a brother. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Russel Novak of Toledo and Mr. and Mrs. Art Koester, rural Gladbrook.
50 yrs. ago Feb. 27, 1970 Paul Bruene was re-elected fire chief of the Gladbrook Fire Department and will serve his second term. Other officers for the department are Ronald Schmidt, Assistant Chief; Roger Eggers, Captain; Mike Wentzien, Lieutenant; Roland Dahms, Secretary-treasurer. Jay Moeller, Gladbrook’s senior 165 pounder, qualified in the District wrestling tournament this past weekend for the State Tournament to be held in Des Moines, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27 & 28. Gladbrook girls lost in the second round of the Sectional to Reinbeck 64-40. Ila Landt led the scoring for Gladbrook with 29 points. Player of the Week was Ila Landt. Postmaster Duane Clow said today that a new order from Postmaster General Winton M. Blount will mean substantial improvements in mail delivery services. Postmaster General Blount has advised the local postmaster of provisions of new order making home delivery services available for the first time to 4 million Americans. Robert E. Engel, a native of Gladbrook, assistant dean in the college of liberal arts and specialist in the history and philosophy of higher education, has been named assistant to the president of the University of Iowa. Engel is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Engel, who moved to Florida a few years ago. He is a graduate of Gladbrook High School. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Ohrt of Gladbrook are the parents of a daughter born 5:30 Saturday, February 21. She has been named Deena Eileen. Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Thomsen became the parents of a daughter on Saturday, February 21. She weighed 7 pounds 15 ounces and has been named Ann Margaret. 60 yrs. ago Feb. 26, 1960 The Gladbrook Panthers upset a favored Dysart team 53-52 Monday night in an overtime and whizzed past Traer 93-66 Wednesday night to advance to the semi-finals of Class A boys sectional tournament being held at Gladbrook and Tama this week. Gladbrook Pantherettes moved into the District Tournament Saturday night with a 74-61 victory over Garwin in the Sectional finals at Traer. The defending state champions displayed some magnificent basketball as they racked up their 24th win this season. In district tournament pairings Gladbrook will open their first round play against Garrison. Mr. and Mrs. Loren Busch announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Shirley Kay, to Ted K. Pemberton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Pemberton of Garwin. The wedding is planned for March 25. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Martens, Grundy Center, announce the engagement of their daughter, Marjorie Ann, to Neil E. Freitag, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Freitag of Elkader.
70 yrs. ago Feb. 24, 1950 The Gladbrook Panthers fought their way into the Class B sectional tournament finals by slipping past Montour Wednesday night 31-30. The Panthers swept past LeGrand Monday night 54-32 as they advanced to the finals. The Gladbrook girls closed their season last Friday night at Dinsdale 51-36. Jay Gould’s Circus has been secured for the Gladbrook Corn Carnival August 17, 18 and 19. Mr. Gould’s circus includes many rides, side shows, and exhibit of wild animals. Donna Dixon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Dixon, of Garwin, is one of 32 finalists in the state free-throw contest. Donna won the district championship at Waterloo last weekend by tossing in 22 out of 25 shots. Jackie Patton, 8th grade, won the spelling contest conducted in the local schools Tuesday morning and the right to represent Gladbrook in the county contest at Tama in March. Mary Delfs, 8th grader, was runner-up. She will go to the county contest also. 80 yrs. ago March 1, 1940 A cast of about 200 Tama county people will present a county-wide Farm Bureau and 4-H pageant at the Wieting Theater in Toledo, Wednesday, March 6 and at the opera House in Traer, Thursday, March 7. The name of the pageant is “Yesterday and Today”. The script is original and has been prepared from current and historical events in Tama County. Local people have written many of the scenes. The annual Tama County spelling bee in which both town and rural schools participate is to be held in the courtroom of the Courthouse in Toledo on Saturday, March 30. The winner is to be Tama County’s representative in the state contest held in Des Moines, April 20. 90 yrs. ago Feb. 28, 1930 Candidates for city officers are beginning to line up and it looks as though we would have two or three tickets in the field. One ticket will be headed by A. H. Steffa for mayor followed by Theo Lage, J. W. Gethmann, Wayne Foster, R. C. Allard and Hy Wentzien for councilmen. During the electrical storm early Monday morning, at about 3:30 a.m. a bolt of lightning hit the large barn on the H. H. Wentzien farm seven miles northeast of Gladbrook and in a short time the entire building and its contents were a mass of ruins, causing a loss of nearly $5,000.00. The community was shocked early Wednesday morning when it came known that Mrs. J. F. Thomsen had passed away at her home in this city following a heart attack. Mrs. Thomsen was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tank and lived many years in Lincoln township. She was married to Dr. J. F. Thomsen about 25 years ago and to this union one son, Lloyd was born. The Paramount Hatchery and Feed Store will have a formal opening Saturday, March 1.
