30 yrs. ago Feb. 23, 1990 Gary and Deb Johnson are the proud parents of their first child, a daughter, Abby Jayne, born February 8 at 2:40 a.m. She weighed 7 lbs. 4 1/2 oz. and was 20 inches long. Grandparents are Keith and Lucy DeWitt and Bob and Esther Johnson all of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Vern Cooling of Garwin announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, DeeAnna, to Todd Robert Feldman. A March 24 wedding is planned. 40 yrs. ago Feb. 29, 1980 Marcia Kay Otto, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Otto, of rural Gladbrook, was crowned 1980 Tama Co. Pork Queen at the annual banquet held Feb. 23. Shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon Dennis McGowan, a neighbor, spotted smoke emerging from the Earl and Sherry Murty’s farm home east of Gladbrook. The Gladbrook fire department was summoned, but with the strong winds fanning the blaze, were not able to save the two-story frame house. The fire spread so quickly in the structure that none of Murty’s possessions could be saved. Lisa Jean Gilchrist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Gilchrist, Gladbrook, was among those graduating with distinction at Iowa State University winter quarter graduation on Saturday, February 23. Lisa received a Bachelor of Science degree in Family Environment and Consumer Science. A daughter, Amy Lee, was born to Dennis and Lynna Hauser, Marshalltown, on February 16 at 9 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Gary McKinney announce the birth of their 7 lb. 1 1/2 oz., 20 inch son, Dustin Ray. He was born February 17. 50 yrs. ago Feb. 20, 1970 Miss Patricia Rae Maas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Maas of Gladbrook and Gordon E. Arp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Arp of Gladbrook were united in marriage on Saturday, February 14. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Hamilton of Lincoln announce the engagement of their daughter, Marsha, to Mark Hamer. An August wedding is planned. Gladbrook girls won over Urbana 65-31. Doris Thede led all scoring with 29 points. Wrestling for the Panthers at District are: 115 lbs., Monte Read, Jr., with a 17-7 record; 130 lbs., Kerry Lynch, Sr., with a 14-2 record; 137 lbs., John Hooper, Sr., with a 13-8-2 record and 165 lbs., Jay Moeller, Sr., with a 17-6 record. The Gladbrook Women’s Bowling Tournament ended last weekend with Jeanne Paustian taking top honors with a 1688. 60 yrs. ago Feb. 19, 1960 The Gladbrook Pantherettes currently ranked No. 1 in the state, side tracked Dinsdale Monday night 66-39 as the Sectional Tournament got underway at Traer. Judy Schade tossed in 10 of 12 field goal attempts and 13 of 17 free throws for 33 points. The victory was No. 36 in a row for Gladbrook, the 22nd straight this season. Last Friday night the Gladbrook teams conquered Central City here in a doubleheader with the girls winning 59-34 and the Gladbrook boys claiming a 69-46 win. Richard Froistad scored 27 points to lead the Panthers. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Weaver became the parents of a boy born Sunday morning at 2:15 a.m. He weighed 5 lbs. 6 oz. and has been named Bret Allen. Mrs. Weaver is the former Phyllis Morrow. Delmer Thede, farmer living southwest of Gladbrook and president of the Gladbrook School Board, sustained painful injuries to his back Monday morning while lighting a gas hog water fountain at his home. As Mr. Thede was lighting the water heater, an explosion occurred which threw him into the air about three to four feet. He lit on his back and was quite badly shaken up, but luckily no serious damage was done. Dennis Rehder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Rehder of Gladbrook won the half-mile run in 1:56.1 in a triangular track meet between Northwestern, Wisconsin and Iowa held at Madison, Wisconsin last Saturday. The Iowa Hawkeyes won the meet as they amassed 67 points, with six first places. About forty relatives and friends helped Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Sienknecht celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary at their home Feb. 6th. The evening was spent socially and at a late hour refreshments were served, the anniversary cake having been baked and decorated by Mrs. Raymond Hamann. 70 yrs. ago Feb. 17, 1950 The annual rural school township school spelling contests will be held for Tama County March 3. Mrs. Lester Engel of Gladbrook and Mrs. Hugo Joens of Toledo have been appointed Crew Leaders of the third census district and will have immediate charge of census in Tama County. The new telephone switchboard in Gladbrook was cut-over Wednesday afternoon and patrons began getting new phones installed immediately. The business houses will get their phones first, then residents on private lines next. Residents on party lines will start getting their phones this weekend. The new phones are the desk type. Lynn Luethje was elected Senior Crew Leader at the first meeting of “The Explorers” Thursday of last week in the Legion Hall. Sixteen boys attended the meeting. The organization is sponsored by the Gladbrook Legion Post. Tama County experienced its heaviest snow of the winter Monday and Tuesday when more than ten inches fell. Strong northeast winds piled the snow into deep drifts all over the county, closing practically all roads and disrupting auto travel. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Pansegrau, former residents of the Gladbrook community, were killed in an auto crash Monday near Sheffield. The Pansegrau’s two sons, Edgar, 11, and Robert, 13, were injured in the accident and remain in critical condition. Funeral services were held for Mrs. Henry Eggers, who passed away Thursday of last week. Mrs. Catherine Eggers, daughter of Henry and Augusta Landt, was born in Scott County, Iowa, on February 22, 1865. In 1886 she came to Tama County with her family. She was united in marriage with Henry Eggers on January 27, 1893. Funeral services were held Saturday at Amity Church for John Vest, 68, who died early Thursday morning of last week of a heart attack. Mr. Vest, the son of John and Janet Mason Vest, was born on a farm near Garwin, November 14, 1881. On November 4, 1909 he was united in marriage to Mae Uhlenberg. 80 yrs. ago Feb. 23, 1940 Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Wescott are the parents of a son born at 10:23 a.m. Saturday. In observance of their 20th wedding anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. William Mohr invited over 50 relatives and friends to their home Sunday evening. The time was spent playing games. Mr. and Mrs. Mohr were married Feb. 18, 1920. They are the parents of five children, Marcella, Doris, Donald, Robert, and Paul. Nearly 100 persons attended the Interior Decorating and Imperial Wallpaper demonstration at the American Legion hall Tuesday evening by the local dealer, H. J. Goettsch. 90 yrs. ago Feb. 21, 1930 Postmaster Burke is feeling a little puffed up this week over the arrival of a new canceling machine which makes the work a lot easier and speeds up the mail delivery. Friday, February 28 the new high school building will be opened to public inspection and dedicated at program in the evening. Members of the county board of supervisors and representatives of nineteen townships met in Toledo Tuesday forenoon as an approving board and unanimously adopted a three-year county road program as provided by the Bergman Act. Ninety-eight and one-half miles are included in the improvement program adopted for grading. Claus Hein and Freda Engel, both of Gladbrook, were quietly married at 3 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at Zion Lutheran Church at Dysart.
