30 yrs. ago Feb. 16, 1990 Craig (Ernie) Jensen was hired as the new part-time maintenance man at Garwin. Randy Beichley, Gladbrook, will be the Iowa Jaycees’ representative to the United States Jaycees 34th National Outstanding Young Farmer Awards Congress Feb. 22-25 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Beichley is among nominees from 40 states who will vie to become one of the four National Outstanding Young Farmer’s for 1990. Gladbrook Girl Scout Troops #301 and #100 attended the council sponsored Winter Carnival at Camp Tahigwa on Feb. 3 & 4. Members attending were Nicole Greve, Emily Russell, Jessica Schultz, Charity Casali and Janell Schultz. Janice and Jerry Schultz accompanied the group. Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. Herter of Grundy Center are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Erika, to Michael Hortsmann, son of Henry and Arlene Horstmann of Gladbrook. An August wedding is being planned. Jeff Schulz, Gladbrook, was named winner of the Iowa Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmers Contest, Saturday, February 10. Jeff was selected among four other finalists from across the state. 40 yrs. ago Feb. 22, 1980 Gladbrook Panther wrestlers have five matmen qualify for District. They are Harris Crumrine, Kevin Garvey, Joey Wegner, Scot Storjohann and Kelvin Izer. They will compete in the District Tournament at Conrad, Saturday, February 23. The Garwin girls upset the Gladbrook Pantherettes 66-65 on a last second shot by Donna Rohach to win the 1A Sectional at Gladbrook Tuesday night. The Pantherettes close out the season with a 13-7 record. Garwin moves to District play with an 8-11 tally. Mrs. Emma Appelgate, 96, of Green Mountain, lifetime resident of the Chapel area, died Wednesday afternoon. Born Emma Beichley, May 20, 1883, in the Chapel Church community in Tama County, she was the daughter of Christian and Catherine Shook Beichley. On Feb. 6, 1907, at the home of her parents she was married to Frank Appelgate and they always farmed in the Chapel and Garwin areas. Mr. and Mrs. Randy Mercer of Cedar Rapids are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Justina Lynn. Justina weighed 5 lbs. 2 1/2 oz. and was 18 inches long.
50 yrs. ago Feb. 13, 1970 The girls basketball team won over Hudson 37-31 in a defensive battle, but lost to North Tama 37-31 in a stalling ball game. Ila Landt led all the scorers in the Hudson game with 17 points. Doris Thede had 8 points, all scored in the fourth quarter. This week’s Player of the Week is Doris Thede. The Panthers kept their conference hopes alive by splitting a pair of conference games during the past week. The Gladbrook five fell to defeat at Hudson 65-55 on Tuesday and came back to defeat North Tama on Friday, 70-64. John Plett led the scoring in the Hudson game with 16 points. John Thompson and Rick Wiebensohn combined for a total of 51 points to lead Gladbrook past North Tama. Player of the Week was John Thompson. The Gladbrook wrestling team advanced four men to the district wrestling tournament last Tuesday evening in the sectional meet held at Conrad. Kerry Lynch, John Hooper, Monte Read, and Jay Moeller are the Panthers that placed. Kerry Lynch took first in the 130 lb. class. John Hooper, Sr., at 137 lbs.; Jay Moeller, Sr., at 165 lbs.; and Monte read, Jr., at 115 lbs. lost in the finals but wrestled back to take second which qualified them for District Tournament. Under a new Post Office Department program announce Monday, persons living more than a quarter mile from 18,700 post offices that do not have city delivery are now eligible to receive delivery at home. Communities in the Fourth District in Tama County which are eligible for the new service are Buckingham, Chelsea, Clutier, Dysart, Elberon, Garwin, Gladbrook, Lincoln, and Montour. Robert Wiese, Gladbrook, was appointed musical director of the Marshalltones. 60 yrs. ago Feb. 12, 1960 The Board of Education of the Gladbrook Community School District announced this week that they have hired Richard D. Riekena, commercial instructor here for the past four years, as full-time principal for high school and junior high school during the 1960-61 school year. Mark Putney, attorney for the Iowa Power & Electric Co., Des Moines, left for Washington D.C. where he will appear before the Federal Power Commission this week in protest against the proposed increase of rates of the Northern Natural Gas Co. which are suppliers in this area. The Gladbrook Pantherettes will begin their State Championship title defense next week at Traer as the 1960 Sectional Tournaments get underway around the state. The champs walloped Union-Whitten 76-45 here Friday night of last week and rolled past Hubbard on Tuesday night 63-37. Gladbrook’s first opponent on the 1960 title trail will be Dinsdale. The Gladbrook boys added two victories to their record this week. Against Union-Whitten the boys captured the win 47-44 and stopped Wellsburg on Tuesday 52-42. The Christ Lutheran Church in Gladbrook was the scene of the wedding Saturday, February 6 when Miss Deanna Schwabauer, of Marshalltown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Schwabauer of Gladbrook, became the bride of Johnny Frank Turner of Alabama. 70 yrs. ago Feb. 10, 1950 A tall Reinbeck quintet outflanked the Gladbrook Panthers Tuesday night to earn a 27-52 victory here. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lubbert became the parents of a daughter, Dorothy Ann, born Monday morning at 4 a.m. She weighed 8 pounds 14 ounces. She was born on her mother’s birthday. Elmer Eilers entered the Deaconess hospital Monday and underwent surgery. The Gladbrook Loyal Lassies 4-H Club of Lincoln and Spring Creek townships is the first 4-H club in Tama County to contribute to the fund for financing an Iowa 4-H Camping project. The project, building a state 4-H Club Camp, is being launched this year by the state 4-H Club Department. Each club which contributes $5 or more to the project is entitled to submit a name for the camping site. The Gladbrook Loyal Lassies contributed $30. From the Purple and Gold – “Trash Can” Somebody discovered a nice hill north of town for sliding and rigged up a party Saturday night. If anyone looks funny this week, it’s only the after effects from weiners, hot cocoa, plus the sliding. Nobody is sorry though!! Carroll W. is taking a liking to a red-headed eighth grader. He and JoAnn O. were at the show here Friday night. Flash it’s rather late, but a certain freshman girl went with a certain graduate of ’49 last week “Tete”. How about that Sally? It looks like an old couple is back together again – how about it Mim and Lee? By the way, I didn’t know sophomores had their class rings yet! Some of the couples taking in the dance at Marshalltown Monday night were Elaine D. and Loren T., Marlene S. and Pete W., Phyllis H. and Pete O. They must have had a WOW of a time!! Also together Monday night were Darlene L. and Dave T. They were seen at the Uptown Theater. 80 yrs. ago Feb. 16, 1940 One hundred and fifty mothers and sons attended the banquet Monday evening at the social rooms of the Methodist church sponsored by the Ladies Aid. A miscellaneous shower honoring Mrs. Wayne Sienknecht, the former Mae Oaks was given Saturday evening at the Arthur Wiese home. Guests included 24 relatives. Hostesses were Mrs. Wiese, Mrs. G.Earl Stauffer and Mrs. Ray Allard. Mrs. William Dahms sustained a bone fracture and dislocation of the ankle of her left leg Tuesday evening when she fell on the icy walk near the home of Mrs. Carrie Koester. Shortly afternoon Thursday the local fire department received a call from Henry Plaehn’s home, three and a half miles east of Lincoln to extinguish a fire in the garage, which burned to the ground destroying the contents, including a washing machine and stove. The chicken house also caught fire and will require extensive repair. 90 yrs. ago Feb. 14, 1930 The new school building will be dedicated on Friday, February 28. The building will be open during the latter part of the afternoon and early evening for inspection. In the evening there will be a program arranged including an excellent speaker. The high school orchestra and glee clubs will entertain with several musical numbers. Miss Mamie Tams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Tams and Mr. Otto Hamann, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Hamann were united in marriage Wednesday afternoon. Gladbrook will have three veterinaries after next Saturday when Dr. R. J. Flynn, of White Lake S. D. hangs up his shingle in the rooms recently occupied by Dr. J. F. Thomsen in the Walter building. Farm relief has hit Walter Medberry but he does not believe that the election of President Hoover had anything to do with it. He has two Holstein cows which are twins and this week these twins each gave birth to a pair of twin calves. If that isn’t farm releif we never heard of it.
