30 yrs. ago Feb. 9, 1990 Albert Cecil West, 77, longtime newspaper publisher of Gladbrook died Friday, February 2 of congestive heart failure. Born October 17, 1912, in Coon Rapids, Iowa he was the son of Thomas and Blanch Stanley West. In 1935 he moved to Gladbrook and purchased the newspaper, which he operated with his father until 1976 and they added the Garwin Sun newspaper in 1952. On October 29, 1937 at Bayard he was married to Mary Kennedy. Jim & Angel Bush, Marshalltown, are the proud parents of their first child, a son, born Sunday, Feb. 4. Casey James weighed 6 lbs. 7 oz. and was 20 1/4 inches long. Grandparents are Violet Bush of Gladbrook and Claude & Pat Smith of Garwin. Ron & Linda Gamble, Michigan, are happy to announce the birth of their second child, Sheree Lyn, on Feb. 7. She weighed 8 lbs. 7 oz. Ron & Linda have a 21-month-old son, Eric Ray. Grandparents are Dr. & Martha Gamble, Gladbrook. Lynne & Dave Dirkmann are the parents of their first daughter, Emily Lynn, born Feb. 2, which was he great-grandmother Helga Dreessen’s 90th birthday. Emily weighed 8 lbs. 12 oz. Grandparents are Ray & Betty Wiebensohn, great-grandmother’s are Helga Dreessen and Christine Wiebensohn. Deena Ohrt, Gladbrook, has been awarded the Ruth Estes Recognition Award at American Institute of Business. Deena was also named to the Dean’s List for the 1989 Fall Quarter. She is the daughter of Curtis & Karen Ohrt. Helga Dreessen of Westbrook Acres was honored at an open house for her 90th birthday on Sat. Feb, 3. Helga was born Feb. 2, 1900. She was married to Hans Dreessen March 2, 1921. On Jan. 27, Amanda Buskohl age 10 bowled 104 pins over her average and finished the game with a score of 200. She had six strikes in a row. She bowls on the Saturday Morning Madness League at the Gladbrook bowling alley. 40 yrs. ago Feb. 15, 1980 TeKippe’s Jack & Jill sponsored bowling team won Gladbrook Women’s City Bowling Tournament held at the Gladbrook Bowl. Their winning score for the team event was 2,744. Team members included Neva Lage, Dorothy Landt, Terri Landt, Eleanor Parsons and Kathy Fleming. Mr. and Mrs. William Schadt of Lincoln, Iowa will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Bill and Polly were married in Lancaster, Mo. Feb. 19, 1955. Mrs. Ella Plett, 88, of Gladbrook, died Thurs. Feb. 7. Born Ella Ladehoff on May 18, 1891 in Tama County she was the daughter of William and Sophia Bern Ladehoff. On September 18, 1915 she was married to Henry Paustian and to this union five children were born. Henry died on Dec. 5, 1944. On Sept. 12, 1950 she was married to Alfred Plett and he died in March 1956. Mrs. Myrtle Wiese, 91, of Gladbrook, died Thurs. Feb. 7. Born Myrtle Rosenberger on Oct. 13, 1888 in Marshall County she was the daughter of George & Delilia Tripp Rosenber. She taught 52 years in the Gladbrook and Conrad area. In November of 1920 she was married to Arthur G. Wiese, they resided in Gladbrook their entire married life. Arthur died in 1962. William F. Conrad, 88, of Gladbrook, died Monday, February 11. Born April 3, 1891, in Gladbrook, he was the son of Wilhelm and Caroline Flamme Conrad. He never married and spent his entire life in Gladbrook. Lowell and Vicki LeMaster of Canton, Illinois, became the parents of their second child, a son, Chad Matthew, weighing seven pounds eight ounces, born Feb. 6. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Floyd F. Cutler of Garwin. Vernal Hall of Garwin is the great grandfather.


50 yrs. ago Feb. 6, 1970 The Pantherettes defeated Eldora 49-44 in the Tuesday night game, with Ila Landt getting 29 points. Linda Mehaffy led the guard court in rebounds. Reinbeck downed the Gladbrook girls 58-40 on Friday. The player of the week is Jane Volkens, sophomore. The Girls Sectional Tournaments start nest week. The Gladbrook Pantherettes open their tournament play on Sat. Feb. 14 on their home court against Urbana. The Gladbrook boys split a pair of contests in the past week, losing to 20th ranked Eldora 62-60 and downing conference for Reinbeck 63-56. Top scorers for Gladbrook this week were Rick Wiebensohn, John Plett and Tom Pippert. Player of the week is Terry Matters. The Panther wrestling team had three meets in seven days, winning two and losing only to LaPorte City. They won against Dysart-Geneseo and Eldora. John Pageler, 89, longtime Gladbrook area farmer, passed away last Friday evening. Mr. Pageler was born April 5, 1880, the son of Gerhardt and Mary Pageler in Tama County. April 6, 1910 he was married to Mattie Evens. The couple farmed on the same farm southwest of Gladbrook in Marshall County since their marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Lage are the parents of a daughter born Sunday, February 1. Funeral services were held for Mrs. Marvin Jones, 61, of rural Gladbrook, who died at her home of a coronary last Saturday afternoon. Born Faith McRill on December 23, 1908, she was the daughter of Bert and Estella McCracken McRill on a farm southwest of Galdbrook, where she lived all her life. September 25, 1928, she was married to Marvin Jones and they made their home on the farm where she was born. Miss Janice Roberts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Roberts of Gladbrook and Joseph E. Peevy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hoye Peevy of Atlanta, Georgia, were united in marriage on Friday, January 30. Mrs. Lucille McDowell, Marshalltown, announces the marriage of her daughter, Jolene Sue, to Private Wayne E. Boldt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Evan Boldt, Garwin. The ceremony took place on December 29th at Blair, Nebraska. 60 yrs. ago Feb. 5, 1960 One of the top basketball games of the year was played here Saturday night as the Gladbrook Pantherettes, rated No. 1 team in the state, knocked off Bounderant-Farrar, rated No. 4 team in the Northeast district 62-47. Schade and Lynk each dumped in 24 points with Sonksen adding 14. The Gladbrook boys raced to a 76-35 victory over Bounderant-Farrar with Froistad hitting 32 points. Tuesday night the Gladbrook teams defeated Beaman-Conrad in a double header. The Pantherettes rolled 52-28 and the Panthers sped to victory 62-44. Myrna Hauschildt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hauschildt, was named to the Mid-Quarter Honor Roll at C. E. School of Commerce in Omaha, Nebraska. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Lohse will observe their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sun. Feb. 14. Wm. Lohse and Emma Wiese were married Feb. 16, 1910 at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wiese. Mr. and Mrs. Don Hebeler, Davenport, became the parents of a daughter on Jan. 28. She weighed eight pounds and has been named Linda Faye. Mrs. Hebeler is the former Carol Hauschildt. 70 yrs. ago Feb. 3, 1950 The Garwin girls trounced an inexperienced Gladbrook sextet Monday night 53-19 on Gladbrook’s floor while the Roighriders fell before the host team 40-37. Gladbrook girls were knocked out of the Sectional Tournament at Conrad Wednesday night by Green Mountain 16 to 39. Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Raum became the parents of a son Sunday, January 22. The boy has been named Richard Allen. No longer will telephone operators as you “are you waiting” or “are you through” after the new Kellogg switchboard is cut in here. Residents in town will no longer have to turn a little crank in order to get central nor will they have to ask the operator to “ring again.” The new Kellogg switchboard, which has been installed in Gladbrook will automatically do all these things for you. Monday afternoon has been set tentatively by telephone officials here for the cut-over. Dinsdale boys coped the 1950 Tama County Boys Basketball Tournament trophy Saturday night by trouncing Toledo 59-29. From the Purple and Gold – “Trash Can” Elaine D. and Loren Thede from Reinbeck were in Traer Sunday night to a show. Is this getting to be a habit, or rather, this is getting to be a habit!! Who were the two senior boys who asked to take two sophomore girls home after the game Monday night? We won’t tell who they were, but you might ask Mac, Fritz, Lois and Miriam. Better luck nest time!! It seems as if someone was trying to teach Jake a new dance while waiting for the bus to take them home after school. Anyway, they made a “misslip” one landing in one corner – the other in another. Any bruises?? 80 yrs. ago Feb. 9, 1940 Miss Lenore Schroeder, only child of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schroeder of Conrad and Raymond Luethje, youngest son of Mrs. Charles Luethje of Gladbrook were married Friday, January 26. Dr. W. G. Rowley, of Cedar Rapids, has been secured by the program committee to give the main address for the Mother and Son Banquet to be held at the Methodist social rooms next Monday evening, February 12. The local fire department held their annual dinner and election of officers Monday evening at Schryver’s Cafe with the following results: Chief, Carl O. Eilers; Assistant Chief, I. H. Wentzien; Foreman, Donald Fairchild; Assistant Foreman, Raymond Scoel and Secretary-Treasurer, William Murray. In honor of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Fink, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bauerle, and Mr. and Mrs. Nick Hanson’s 25th wedding anniversaries the Ladies Aid members of the Evangelical church sponsored a party Tuesday evening at the church parlors. Gladbrook played poor ball but easily defeated Montour 37-17 on Saturday, February 3. 90 yrs. ago Feb. 7, 1930 With a perfect functioning offense in the last half the Gladbrook Aces swamped the Reinbeck All-Star basketeers on the latter’s court last Friday night, 45-22. Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Putney are moving into the P. D. Burke house on East Hill and will become one of us. Mr. Putney will operate a chicken hatchery and feed store. Gladbrook’s girl team vastly improved played the best game so far this year against their traditional foe, Beaman. This game was fast and furious and for a time looked as though Gladbrook was going to win the game. Lundt was high scorer for Gladbrook with eleven points. The Gladbrook boys won over Beaman 19-16. Hoppe was the outstanding player. One day last week a snow goose landed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brumm and proceeded to get acquainted with things about the place. The bird was easily captured as one wing had been shot and did not operate with perfection required to navigate the air. A band on one leg containing “U. S. 351” shows that the goose came form a federal game preserve and had been officially inspected and registered for breeding purposes. The Northern has taken the matter up with government officials and will attempt to get a history on the bird.
