30 yrs. ago Jan. 19, 1990 January 23 there will be a special vote at the City Garwin to determine if the citizens want to change the term of office of the council members from two years to four year staggering terms. John Putney resigned as a member of the Gladbrook School Board. He stated his reason for leaving was his new job. Emily Putney was appointed to fill his position until the September election. Jan. 21-27 has been proclaimed as Jaycee Week in Gladbrook by Mayor Mike Wentzien. Esther Dierks, 88, Gladbrook, died Monday, January 15 at Westbrook Acres. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Gladbrook. Born April 25, 1901, in Tama County, she was the daughter of Peter and Eilie Moeller Otto. On January 24, 1924, she was married to Albert H. Dierks and they farmed northwest of Gladbrook until moving into Gladbrook in 1965. Stan and Barb Walton are announcing the engagement and approaching wedding of DuWayne Alan to Robin Lee Wheeler. A February 17th wedding in Las Vegas has been set. Some anxious moments for Marvin and Mary Otto when they looked out and saw their 60 foot windmill swaying from the gusty winds last Thursday. Marvin hooked a log chain to a tractor to stabilize it and on Monday morning Gethmann’s hug crane took it down. Sherry Lynn Pennington and Sherman Scott Drury with their parents, Mrs. Louise M. Pennington, Bedford, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. John V. Drury, Garwin would like to announce their engagement upcoming wedding. A May 12, 1990 wedding is planned. Gail Sheridan, daughter of Dean and Irene Sheridan, Burlington, Iowa, announces her engagement to Gene Lucht, son of Herman and Ethel Lucht, Garwin. A March 17, 1990 wedding is planned. 40 yrs. ago Jan. 25, 1980 The Tama County Democratic Caucus was held Monday night showed an overwhelming 440 people participating. This is an estimated 50% higher than the 1976 caucus. The 128 delegates were divided as follows: Carter 79 (62%), Kennedy 30 (23%), and 19 uncommitted. The Tama County Republican Caucus held Monday night had 701 people present. A straw poll (a non-binding vote) was taken during the caucus and showed Reagan a top vote getter. The 200 delegrates were divided as follows: Reagan 341 (48.6%), Bush 128 (18.3%), Crane 70 (10%), Baker 59 (8.4%), Connally 52 (7.4%), Dole 38 (5.4%), Anderson 8 (1.1%), uncommitted 5 (.7%). Deputy Sheriff Bruce Brolin has announced that he is running for the position of Tama County Sheriff. Wednesday afternoon a Northwestern train and a Lincoln Co-op truck collided at the Main Street intersection in Lincoln. The truck was attempting to go on the scale at the Co-op. No one was injured. This week Mae Sienknecht and Orville Brekke representing the Gladbrook-Lincoln Ambulance Service presented a plaque to Mrs. Jerry (Irene) Psotka in memory of her husband’s years with the service. Jerry joined the ambulance service in December of 1971, when it was first organized, at which time Jerry was elected chairman. In December of 1976 Jerry had to retire from the service due to his health. Mr. and Mrs. DeVere Goettsch of Gladbrook will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Ethel Janssen and DeVere Goettsch were married February 6, 1955 at Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Gladbrook. Effective Monday of this week, Stan Goos became the new manager of the Standard Station in Gladbrook, formerly know as Rick’s Standard. Did you happen to see all those ladies going into Shady’s last Wednesday afternoon? If so, you probably wondered why they seemed so happy – you see it was Shady’s Ladies Day – a special one, their 10th anniversary. In January of 1970, Norma Sass had the idea for the ladies to have a day for their special recreation – 500. Shady went along with that and offered them the use of his building. He said if the men cloud play sheepshead (Schopfkopf) in the morning, the ladies could play 500 in the afternoon, with no men allowed! Wednesday was the day selected and each week Wednesday afternoons are set aside for the ladies. Alfred Steiert of Osage, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 16, 1980. Alfred was born on a farm in Crystal Township Tama County Iowa on December 23, 1905, the son of Isador and Marie Moeller Steiert. He graduated from Garwin High School. He was married to Florence Pearl Bensend on September 23, 1933. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Mooney are proud to announce the birth of their 8 lb. 15 oz. daughter, Amy Lyn. Amy was born January 15. To welcome her home is her 5-year-old sister, Michelle. 50 yrs. ago Jan. 16, 1970 The Gladbrook Panthers extended their season mark to 7-2 and their conference record 5-2 by defeating North Tama and Dysart-Geneseo in conference action this past week. Ila Landt led the Gladbrook girls with 40 points in Tuesday nights victory over North Tama 57-50. Landt hit 18 of 23 from the charity line. Jane Volkens had 6 points and Jeanette Pieper had 11 points. Linda Mehaffy led the guard court with 15 rebounds while Jo Moeller had 8. The wide spread hog cholera outbreak in Iowa last week resulted in 72 Iowa townships and 18 counties placed under federal and state hog cholera quarantines. Tama County townships which are under embargo are Carlton, Indian Village, Highland, Clark, Oneida, Carroll, Perry, Buckingham, and Geneseo. John (Jack) Evens, 79, longtime Gladbrook resident, passed away at Oakview Nursing Home in Conrad last Sunday morning. Born October 31, 1890, in Tama County, he was the son of Jens and Emma Stolding Evens. The Rev. Donald Martin, pastor of the Salem Church of Lincoln, has been appointed for the third year as Tama County Cancer Crusade Chairman. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harder of Gladbrook announce the engagement of their daughter, Judy, to Kim Sienknecht, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Sienknecht of Lincoln. Mrs. Elmer Ladehoff was recently installed as Worthy Matron of Olivene Chapter O.E.S. Her husband was installed as Worthy Patron. 60 yrs. ago Jan. 15, 1960 Mr. and Mrs. John Dahms of Toledo announce the engagement of their daughter, Mina Mae, to Melvin Wayne Knaack of Gladbrook. An April wedding is being planned by the couple. Perry Burke, 86, one of Gladbrook’s pioneers, died Wednesday night at his home in Gladbrook following a long illness. Mr. Burke was born in Crystal township, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Burke. A daughter was born Friday, January 8, at 12:45 p.m. at Evangelical Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Wilson of Beaman. The little Miss weighed 6 pounds 5 ounces and has been named Cathy Rae. They have another daughter, Becky Jo, almost 3-years-old. Mrs. Wilson will be remembered as Barbara Storjohann. The Gladbrook Pantherettes claimed their fourth consecutive Tama County Girl’s Basketball title Saturday night as they sailed to a 68-38 victory over Dinsdale on the Garwin court. Attempting to stop Gladbrook’s scoring machine by placing two guards on Judy Schade, Dinsdale left Marcia Lynk comparatively free. Marcia took quick advantage of every opportunity pumped in 37 points. Judy still collected 21. The Board of Education of the Gladbrook Community School District has named Harold Beichley as their new member to replace Mrs. Marjorie Rugg who recently resigned. 70 yrs. ago Jan. 13, 1950 Outplaying their opponents all the way, the Gladbrook Panthers swept by a favored Traer quintet here Tuesday night 41-36 to score their second straight victory. The Gladbrook girls were knocked out of the Tama County Tournament at Montour on Monday night as the Montour girls downed the Pantherettes 45-13. Fire broke out in the boiler room of the Green Mountain consolidated school about 9:30 a.m. Saturday causing about $1000 damages. The fire was confined to the furnace room, but smoke damage was reported in the rest of the building. Other damage noted was to the electrical wiring, pipe installations, and furnace room walls. Gilbert Benson, fire chief, said the fire is believed to have started from spontaneous combustion. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Neil became the parents of a daughter, Kathryn Rae, Monday morning weighing 6 lbs. 13 1/2 oz. Mr. and Mrs. Charles King became the parents of a son, William Bruce, weighing 8 lbs. Thursday morning. The infant was born at 8:30 in the Deaconess Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. John Oaks, Jr. are the parents of a 7 pound 11 ounce baby girl born Thursday morning at the Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown. The Oaks’ have two other daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Kvidera of Gladbrook became parents of a son, Martin Ray, born December 30 at the Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown. He weighed seven pounds and thirteen ounces. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Carlson, Marshalltown, are the parents of a boy born January 6. He has been named Thomas Ray. Mrs. Carlson is the former Ruth Delfs. Twin boys were born to Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Mullnix Saturday, January 7, 1950, around noon. They have been named Marshall Gaylon and Marlyn Wayne. They weighed 5 pounds and 7 ounces and 6 pounds and 2 ounces respectively. Hazel Fallgatter was elected President of the Gladbrook Commercial Club for 1950. Aunt Jemima will be in Gladbrook with her famous pancakes Saturday at the Fallgatter Grocery, serving from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 80 yrs. ago Jan. 19, 1940 The Gladbrook Fire Department is progressing very well with their rural protection plan and $1.00 per year service fee membership. It is a plan by which those farmers who join receive the protection service of the department an are given immediate service on a call for the small sum they pay. Sunday morning Gladbrook was “snowbound”, definitely so, not even a Sunday paper put in an appearance. Trains ran behind schedule and cars just weren’t getting through. Sidewalks were piled deep and everyone waded in drifts hip deep. The highways were not open until Monday and then motorists were urged to proceed with caution. It snowed all day Saturday and Sunday and the temperature remained mild until Sunday night when it dropped to 7 above zero, however all during the storm a heavy wind blew piling the snow high. Monday evening it dropped to 23 below zero. The Gladbrook High cagers started on the wrong foot by letting the Reinbeck Rams defeat them by a score of 44-24 when the final period ended. 90 yrs. ago Jan. 17, 1930 Dr. C. E. Butts, a veterinary, of Brooklyn, Iowa, was in town Thursday morning and has decided to locate in Gladbrook and engage in practice. The death of Dr. Thomsen left Gladbrook with only one veterinary and there are those who believe that competition is the life and trade. The masquerade dance given at the American Hall Friday evening was attended by a large crowd and they all report an enjoyable evening. Mrs. Mary Burt, 91, reputed to be Garwin’s oldest resident and one of the early pioneers of north Tama County, died at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the home of her son, Grant Burt, with whom she made her home. The Aces narrowly escaped defeat Tuesday night when they nosed out the Hudson Yellow Jackets on the home floor, 25 to 24, in a very loosely played game of basketball.
