30 Years Ago December 22, 1989 Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus made a visit to Gladbrook last Saturday, at the Gladbrook Memorial Building. Many problems have been caused by this lingering January like cold spell. As temperatures dipped below zero, cars wouldn’t start, cattle waters froze-up, and a water main in Gladbrook froze and broke. Roger and Donna Smith of Garwin celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. 40 Years Ago December 28, 1979 Harry H. Harms, 68, of Gladbrook, passed away Wednesday at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. Mrs. Anna D. Busch, 76, of Gladbrook, passed away at the Westbrook Nursing Center Monday morning, where she had been a patient for the past three years. Mrs. Hilda M. Poland, 85, former Gladbrook resident, passed away at the Clarksville Community Nursing Center, Friday afternoon where she had been a patient since 1973. 50 Years Ago December 19, 1969 Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Haller, of Marble Rock, announce the engagement of their daughter, Marcia Le Ann, to Mark L. Koble, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Koble, of Gladbrook. Wayne Copenhaver is to head the Gladbrook Commercial Club. Mrs. Roy Hulse, 84, former Gladbrook resident, passed away last Saturday night at Community Hospital East in Marshalltown where she had been a patient for 10 days. Santa will be coming to Gladbrook on Saturday, December 20. 60 Years Ago December 18, 1959 Funeral services were held here Tuesday for Perry D. Westfall, 75, a former resident of this community who passed away December 11 at the home of his son in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Santa Claus will make an appearance on Saturday, December 19 in Gladbrook and Lincoln. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hoppe will observe their 25th wedding anniversary. 70 Years Ago December 16, 1949 Gilbert Gethmann, 61, passed away Sunday at his home here after an illness of several years. A Belle Plaine boy became Tama County’s eighth highway fatality. The Gethmann Construction Company, of Gladbrook, is demanding judgement of $38,045.38 against Lois and Max Emerson, of Chelsea, and further asks that a mechanic’s lien be established and enforced against the elevator and feed mill owned and operated by the Emerson’s. 80 Years Ago December 15, 1939 Mrs. Mary Hamann, 82, Gladbrook citizen, passed away at her home following an illness of about two weeks, resulting from a stroke. Herman Mundt observed his 80th birthday. Funeral service for Mrs. U. G. Keesy, 74, a former Gladbrook resident, were held here Tuesday. Miss Anna Broeker, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Broeker, and Willis E. Cornelius, son of Fred Cornelius, of near Toledo, were united in marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Goette have announced the marriage of their daughter, Esther, to Emmet Rhiner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rhiner, of Marshalltown. Eldon Wiese, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wiese, was seriously hurt in a fall over a gate last week. 90 Years Ago December 19, 1929 Known from coast to coast as the “Racing Fool,” “Speed” Bradford will furnish a new era in speeding to the public in Gladbrook and vicinity for four days starting December 27 and continuing until December 30. Gladbrook will hove a new industry next month. Lawrence Putney has leased the Clemann building east of the post office and will conduct a baby chick hatchery and handle a full line of feeds, poultry and stockmen’s supplies along with farm and garden seeds.
