30 Years Ago December 8, 1989 The Gladbrook Deli hosted their Grand Opening last Saturday, December 2. Last Monday the city maintenance men, Ron Schmidt and Chuck Delfs, hung up four new Christmas decorations designed at Petty Mfg. in Gladbrook. Chuck and Sherry Woehlk are the proud parents of a son, Levi Gregory, born November 20. He is welcomed home by a sister, Lindsey, 5, and a brother, Tyler, 3. Grandparents are Doug and Ellen McKay, Garwin, and Shirley Woehlk, Garwin. Gordon Hatch, 54, RR Beaman, passed away November 29, at his home of cancer. 40 Years Ago December 14, 1979 Mr. and Mrs. Lanny Younger of Gladbrook became the parents of their first child, a girl, Shelby Rae, born November 24. Mr. and Mrs. Rod Wiebensohn are the parents of a baby boy, Ross Roland, born December 4. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hansen and Leonard Brandt of Reinbeck are the maternal grandparents. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Peter Wiebensohn of Gladbrook. Great grandmothers are Mrs. Erma Storjohann and Mrs. Christine Wiebensohn, both of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Eilers are the parents of a daughter, Cassandra Leah, born December 9. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dost of Marshalltown and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Eilers of Gladbrook. Graveside services for Andrea Lee Hansen, stillborn daughter of Roger and Peggy Peterson Hansen of Gladbrook, will be at the Maple Hill Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Gustave Landt, Jr., 79, Waterloo, passed away Saturday at the Ravenwood Health Care Center. Carole Ann Alvestad and Larry Arlin Otteman were united in marriage on December 1. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Alvestad of Gladbrook and Mr. and Mrs. Arlin Otteman of Sac City, Iowa. Miss Lillie Bartling, 90, passed away December 10 after a long illness, at Grandview Heights Nursing Home in Marshalltown. 50 Years Ago December 5, 1969 Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wolfgram of Traer will observe their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Storjohann of Gladbrook will observe their 25th wedding anniversary. Peace United Church launches its $100,000 building fund drive with a kick-off Supper. 60 Years Ago December 4, 1959 Sara Jeanne Stewart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Stewart of Newton, became the bride of Delmer John Steiert, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Steiert, of Gladbrook, on November 29. Miss Priscilla Shirk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Shirk of Garwin, was united in marriage with Donald Ladehoff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ladehoff of Gladbrook, on November 29. Fred Sonkens Sr., 87, passed away Tuesday at the Tama County Home. 70 Years Ago December 2, 1949 Rudolph William Goettsch, 63, passed away November 24, Thanksgiving Day, after suffering a heart attack at his home northwest of Gladbrook. The electric power to Gladbrook and almost 50 other towns in eastern Iowa was knocked out Tuesday by an explosion in the main plant at Cedar Rapids. Robert W. Stroud, youngest son of Rev. and Mrs. E. R. Stroud, of Garwin and Genevieve Pilmer, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Pilmer, of Des Moines, were united in marriage on November 19. 80 Years Ago December 1, 1939 Announcement has been made of the approaching marriage of Ray Griggs, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Griggs, to Miss Mary Lour Hess, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. G. Hess, of Dearborn, Missouri, on December 17. Word was reached here Tuesday of the death of Ralph Freeburn, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Freeburn, at his home in Watertown, South Dakota. Friday evening Mr. and Mrs. Dan Smith, Ruth and Wayne, will open their new cafe, to be known as “Ma’s Kitchen” in the I. H. Wentzien building, formerly occupied by the Gladbrook Cleaners. At least 84 persons in 25 states were killed in accidents Thursday of last week as the nation observed the first of its two Thanksgivings. At the request of the local postmaster, Miss Anna Wieland, we are publishing the rules and regulations regarding the mailing of Christmas cards and packages. During the last season at least 100 cards had to be discarded because of insufficient postage. 90 Years Ago December 5, 1929 Lee Smith, one of the well known citizens of Gladbrook, was found dead in his room in Honeymoon flat Tuesday afternoon by his friend, Charles Stoeltenberg. Delmar Lester, the 8-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Weiss, was taken ill very suddenly last week, Wednesday, and was taken to the Deaconess hospital at Marshalltown where an operation for congestion of the bowels was performed. The shock was too great for the little one to combat and he passed away shortly afterward. Mr. George McTurk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McTurk and Miss Alma Sonkens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sonkens, were united in marriage. Mrs. Henry Dreessen and Mrs. Hilda Behuke left Tuesday night for Buchhols, Germany, to visit relatives and friends.
