30 Years Ago November 10, 1989 Ed and Marge Harms of Reinbeck will observe their 40th wedding anniversary. Announcement is being made of the engagement and approaching marriage of Vanessa Laws and Kent Miell. Parents of the couple are Meryle Laws of Pueblo, Colorado, and Toms Laws and Jacque Heintz of State Center, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Miell of Gladbrook. Ed and Kathy Ohrt, rural Gladbrook, are the parents of their second child, a son, Zachary Edward, born November 1. He is welcomed home by his sister, Kayla Ann, 2 1/2. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Ohrt, Gladbrook, and Mrs. Alfred Timm, Tama. Great grandparents are Harry and Viola Ohrt, Gladbrook, and Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Shemenski, Martins Ferry, Ohio. 40 Years Ago November 16, 1979 Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Dostal, Marshalltown, announce the engagement of their daughter, Laureen, to Mike Hayward, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roderick Hayward, of Toledo. Debra Ann DeWitt and Gary Robert Johnson were united in marriage on November 10. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Keith DeWitt and Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Johnson. Steve and Chris Arp are the parents of a daughter, Lindsay Leann, born November 10. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. David Arp and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Osten, all of Gladbrook. 50 Years Ago November 7, 1969 Mr. and Mrs. Larry Smith, of Traer, are the parents of their first child, a daughter, Barbara Jean, born October 29. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Smith, Traer, and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lubbert of Gladbrook. Investigators have been busy in Gladbrook all week investigating the break-in at Gladbrook’s Post Office last Sunday night. The thieves obtained $252.56 in cash and $8,966.92 in postage stamps as well as 260 blank money orders. 60 Years Ago November 6, 1959 Tama county has 56 students registered at Iowa State University, Ames, this fall, according to a report made this week. Marguerite M. Miller of Gladbrook has filed suit in Tama County District Court this week for a divorce from James Elwood Miller, charging her husband with cruel and inhuman treatment. Joseph Daniel Hogan, 14-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hogan of Lincoln, passed away suddenly early Sunday evening while playing in the family living room. Cause of the infant’s death has not been determined. 70 Years Ago November 4, 1949 A proposal for purchasing and maintaining a fire truck in Lincoln township lost by one vote in a special election held last week at Lincoln. Alfred W. Krammerer, brother of Peter Krammerer, who passed away here last week, was killed Wednesday evening in Chicago when he was struck by a car. 80 Years Ago November 3, 1939 Three Gladbrook young people, Wayne Wrage, Bob Kroeger, and Virginia Frese, escaped serious injury Wednesday evening when the car in which they were riding struck a freight train. Louise Broeker, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Broeker, became the bride of Duane Hammond, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oren Hammond, of Beaman. 90 Years Ago November 7, 1929 Two men were found dead in Dysart Tuesday, the one directly, the other indirectly the result of a grade crossing accident at the canning factory crossing west of the Dysart station. The dead are Homer Paton, 35, of Dysart, and Dr. L. V. Andrews, 55, of Algona. Mr. Paton passed away from injuries received from when is car wrecked with a passenger train and Dr. Andrews passed away from what is believed to be a heart attack after he got off the passenger train to help Mr. Paton with his injuries.
