30 Years Ago October 20, 1989 The GMG Girls’s Volleyball Team finished first in the Big Iowa Conference. Leo and Linda Lohse, Gladbrook, became the parent’s of a girl, Jody Lee, born October 7. She has a brother, John, 6 1/2 years old. Grandparents are Mrs. Evelyn Lohse, Gladbrook, and John and Jeanette Tomlinson, Traer. Kathy Herink, Gladbrook, is the new postal clerk in the Gladbrook Post Office. A new, part-time postal clerk at the Gladbrook Post Office is Susan Kibby from Conrad. Kayln and Brad Cook of Marion, Iowa, are the parents of a son, Justin Bradley Gordon, born October 12. He has a sister, Lindsey, 3 1/2 years old. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Cook, Cedar Rapids and Mr. and Mrs. Leon Stamp, Garwin. Michele Johannsen and Joey Wegner were united in marriage September 23. Parents of the couple are Keith and Sandy Johannsen of Garwin and Carroll Wegner of Gladbrook. 40 Years Ago October 26, 1979 The public is invited to attend the Open House ribbon cutting ceremony of the new Tama County Care Facility on October 28. The Haunted House, sponsored by the Gladbrook Jaycees, will be open October 26-31. Vivian Elaine Olive, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell D. Olive of Corning, became the bride of Randy C. Mercer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Mercer of Gladbrook on September 22. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Janssen, Cedar Rapids, became the parents of a daughter, Cari Ann, born October 10. She is joined by two brothers, Jeffrey, 8, and Bryan 5. Grandparents are Mrs. Cecile Warren, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hauschildt, Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Storjohann, Bend, Oregon, are the proud parents of a baby boy born October 19. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lyon of Whittier, California, and Mrs. Marcella Storjohann and the late Wendell Storjohann. The new “Welcome to Gladbrook” signs built and erected by the Gladbrook Jaycees are up. The signs have been placed on Highway 96, near Petty’s and the other by the hog buying station. Lawrence Putney, 79, Gladbrook, passed away of a heart attack at his home on October 23. 50 Years Ago October 17, 1969 Marine Private First Class James C. Bauch, son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Bauch of Gladbrook, was promoted to Private First Class upon graduation from recruit training at the Marine Corp Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. Mr. and Mrs. Art Koester received word Wednesday morning of the death of their granddaughter, infant daughter to their son and daughter-in-law, Staff Sgt. and Mrs. Jim Koester of Bismarck, North Dakota. “Rocky’s Pizza”, Gladbrook’s newest business, will hold its Grand Opening this coming Sunday, October 19. Miss Linda Sass, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Sass of Gladbrook, and Randy Pierce, son of Mr. and Mrs. Park Pierce of Colfax, were united in marriage on October 11. An insulator vibrated off a pin on a transformer located directly behind the Tama Northern office last Sunday evening about 9 p.m. and caused two wires to cross making a dead short, shutting off the lights in Gladbrook for approximately 1 1/2 hours. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Sienknecht of Lincoln, are the parents of a son, Randall Miles, born October 7. Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Sienknecht are the paternal grandparents. 60 Years Ago October 16, 1959 Clarence Arp suffered a skull fracture and brain concussion last Friday afternoon at the Earl Plaehn farm while helping saw done a tree which fell into the crotch of a second tree and broke off a dead limb which flew back striking his head. Gladbrook will again have a noon whistle starting Monday, October 19. Sam Martens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Martens, sustained a broken elbow during a football practice Monday at the athletic field. Miss Karen Louise Walton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred J. Walton, became the bride of Robert Dean Niedermann, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Niedermann, all of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Phil Aldrich of Garwin announce the engagement of their daughter, Karna, to Murray Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Johnson of Crystal Lake, Illinois. 70 Years Ago October 14, 1949 Larry James Crouch, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Larkin Crouch, was born on Sunday, October 9, and passed away Thursday morning. Twenty-six girls are out for basketball at the Gladbrook High School. C. Harland Yerkes, auditor for Tama County, submitted his resignation to the board of supervisors on Wednesday morning, effective December 1. Winds reaching an estimated 70 miles per hour velocity swept across Gladbrook and Tama county Monday causing considerable damage to corn, trees, houses and electrical wires. Gladbrook was without electricity for about three hours on Monday. 80 Years Ago October 13, 1939 Dr. and Mrs. P. F. Marling are the parents of a daughter, Clarice Marjorie, born Saturday evening. This is their first child. The Pippert Grain and Coal Company have recently erected five steel bins which will be turned over to the Credit Commodity Corporation. 90 Years Ago October 17, 1929 The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Jessen is ill with scarlet fever. This is the only case in this vicinity as far as we know. At a closing out sale near Dysart last week corn in the field went for $24.00 per acre which is considered low by many farmers in this section of the state. Wednesday morning W. F. Crosby, Gladbrook baker, was taken to the hospital in Marshalltown to receive treatment for blood poison in his hand. Several days ago he received a small cut in his right hand and a little later the member showed signs of blood poison.
