30 Years Ago October 13, 1989 It is National Fire Prevention Week. During the Coronation Ceremony for GMG the 1989 Homecoming King was Brandon Yilek and the Homecoming Queen was Shawnda Hayes. Gov. Terry Branstad signed a proclamation declaring October 1-7 as National 4-H Week. A new couple to the community is Dean and Rachel Nichols. Dean is the new assistant manager for Tabor Grain. Dean is originally from Colorado and Rachel from Indiana. A new employee at the Security Bank, Gladbrook, is Marsha Gaskill from Garwin. She has been a teller at the bank since August 25. Stacey Lynne Beck and Kenneth Lee Brown exchanged marriage vows on August 26. Parents of the couple are Ralph and Carla Beck, Garwin and Tim and Sharon Brown, Clinton. Janet Goettsch and Lawrence Wacha were united in marriage on September 23. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Schulz, Gladbrook, and Mrs. Adeline Wacha, Grinnell, and the late Charles Wacha. John and Marlene Langbehn, Green Mountain, will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. 40 Years Ago October 19, 1979 The new clinic building is completed, inside and out and now awaits the equipment for Drs. LaTendresse, Tracy, Weis, and Dr. David Hall, Dentist. Kevin and Diana Sturtz are the proud parents of a baby girl, Dorinda Rana, born October 5. She has two brothers, Jason and Mitchell, at home. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Edward Babinat of Gladbrook and Mrs. Emma Sturtz, Dysart. C.R.O.P. walkers started from Lincoln to walk to the picnic area on the west side of Union Grove Lake on Sunday, October 14. Lavern and Connie Jackson became the parents of a daughter, Lana Ilene, born October 9. Lana has two sisters, Larae, 4 years old and Laura 2 years old. Grandparents are Mrs. Merrl Ratliff and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Jackson, all of Garwin, and C. A. Ratliff of Arkansas. 50 Years Ago October 10, 1969 Henry A. Broeker will celebrate his 88th birthday on October 14. Mr. and Mrs. John Lynch will observe their Golden Wedding Anniversary. No one filed papers for the office of mayor for the town of Lincoln. Marvin Harders is the retiring mayor. Mr. and Mrs. John V. Drury of rural Gladbrook, announce the engagement of their daughter, Naomi Louise, to Jeffrey Robert Smull, of Minneapolis, Minnesota. 60 Years Ago October 9, 1959 Lavilah Groth is the GHS Homecoming Queen. Mr. and Mrs. Russell VanDuyn became the parents of a son. This is the couple fourth child. The are parents of another son and two daughters. Mrs. VanDuyn is the former Mary Stauffer of this city. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stauffer are the maternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. William D. Walters, of Ashland, Oregon, are the parents of a son, Charles Steven, born on September 30. They have two other children, Laurie and Lisa. Mrs. Walters is the former Betty Wiese. 70 Years Ago October 7, 1949 Miss Colleen Faye Schmidt, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Schmidt of Lincoln, became the bride of James E. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Friend Miller of Morrison on October 2. Charlotte Gettle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Gettle, became the bride of Duane Verlaken, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Verlaken, of Waterloo. Studying the various school papers from around the county are the Purple and Gold staff. The group met at the home of A. C. West this week to discuss the school paper and make future plans for improvement. 80 Years Ago October 6, 1939 Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hauschildt are the parents of a daughter born Monday morning at the home of Mrs. Hauschildt’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thede. Friends received announcements on Wednesday of the wedding of Miss Edna Gienger and Emil Pansegrau which occurred on December 15, 1938. Last year the boys of Ehrig-McTurk Legion Post bought the building known as the old St. Elmo Hotel, and through their combined efforts it is now a first class hall with club rooms. At the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Hooper, Mr. Hooper and his son, James 14, were on their way to the pasture to count cattle when the rifle which James was carrying was accidentally discharged. The bullet passed through the fleshy part of the right foot. A. M. Ames, the third trick operator for the Chicago Great Western railroad, sufferd painful but not serious injuries in a shotgun accident. Mr. Ames was was doing a little target practice with his shotgun. While holding the gun by the barrel with the butt resting on the ground it discharged in some way, the shot pierced his left shoulder, tearing away the muscle, but not injuring the bone. 90 Years Ago October 10, 1929 Fred Engel of Garwin has filed his application for citizenship. Word received here the other day that Meinhardt H. Johansen, a well known Gladbrook boy was married to Miss Lorna Inez Trout of Maxwell, Iowa on September 25. Merle, the little 5-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hibbs, who live on a farm near Green Mountain, fell from the school bus Tuesday and cut a gash on his leg that took twenty-seven stitches to close. Officers arrested eight Grundy Center boys last Thursday night as a sequel to a raid made two weeks ago upon a watermelon patch on the Walter Minor farm, near that city.
