30 Years Ago September 8, 1989 Hilde Pappas has retired as postal clerk at the Gladbrook Post Office after 21 years of service. She has worked with three postmasters: Duane Clow, William Gillispie and the present postmaster Shirley Dreesman. Elsie Paustian will celebrate her 90th birthday. Roger and Terri Luehring are the proud parents of a son, Ryan Douglas, born September 1. He is welcomed home by a sister, Sara, 3 1/2. Grandparents are Don and Alice Hyndman, Churdan, and Dale and Florence Luehring, Terril. David and Sherri Denbow are the proud parents of a son, Jared Richard, born August 30. He is welcomed home by a sister, Ashley, 4. Grandparents are Darrel and Carolyn Groth and Richard and Jolene Denbow. Great grandparents are Harry and Helen Dreessen, Gladbrook, Myrtle Groth, Garwin, and Betty Smaha, LeGrand. 40 Years Ago September 14, 1979 Delores Diane Clayton, Iowa Falls, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Clayton, Ames, and James Douglas Seeman, Beaman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Seeman, Grundy Center, were united in marriage on August 18. Wayne Copenhaver, 65, of Union Grove Lake, long-time Gladbrook businessman, passed away Sunday at his home. Mike DeWitt can be found fishing in his spare time. Mike caught a 9 pound Northern at Union Grove Lake. The fish measured 34 inches long. 50 Years Ago September 5, 1969 The finishing touches were recently put on the new quarters for Shady’s Recreation Center and moving has been completed. “Shady” invites you to stop and look at his new quarters over and enjoy the facilities. Army Private First Class Lavern H. Terbl, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Terbl, was assigned August 13 to the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) in Vietnam as a rifleman. His wife is the former Linda Sams. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Furrow, Marshalltown, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Sharon Kay, to Richard D. Schultz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schultz of Gladbrook. The wedding date is Saturday, September 6. 60 Years Ago September 4, 1959 Joan Marie Putney, daughter of Senator and Mrs. Lawrence Putney of Gladbrook, became the bride of Senator David D. Tews, of Lincoln, Nebraska, son of Mrs. E. L. Reeker and the late August Tews of Northfolk, Nebraska, on August 30. Pauline Ploog, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. A. J. Ploog of Lincoln and Robert A. Johannsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Johannsen of Gladbrook, were united in marriage August 30. Miss Ruth Clarksean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Clarksean of Ward, South Dakota, became the bride of Earl Niedermann, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Niedermann of Gladbrook, on August 23. Enrollment in the Gladbrook Community School Monday totaled 556 students. Enrollment in the Garwin Consolidated School totaled 292 students. 70 Years Ago September 2, 1949 Donna Jean Schultz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Schultz, of Marshalltown, became the bride of Darwin Lynch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Lynch, of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shope announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Beverly, to Marvin Barger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Barger. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Groth. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Evan Goos. A daughter, Kathy Ann, was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Chizek. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harders. Betty Kjormoe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Noduft, of Melbourne, became the bride of Robert H. Matheson, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Matheson, Garwin. Monday, 303 students registered for the 1949-50 school year in Gladbrook. 80 years Ago September 1, 1939 John, Jean, and Richard Fleming, sons and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Fleming, and 4-H members, won many ribbons at Fair. Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Haas, who live southwest of Gladbrook, are the parents of a baby daughter. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Sievers. 90 Years Ago September 5, 1929 While a crew was engaged in bailing rye straw at the rural home of the McGowan Brothers, ove in Grant township, Friday, sparks from the engine set the stack on fire and caused damage to out buildings. Raymond Jorgensen has purchased the restaurant fixtures owned by Ed Chizek and will open a restaurant in Garwin. As a result of a distressing accident that occurred Thursday afternoon, at the Albert Kroeger farm four miles northeast of town, little Donnie Kroeger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kroeger, is a patient in the Deaconess hospital with a fractured upper jaw and a very badly lacerated face. Donnie was kicked in the face by a horse while at play.
