10 YEARS AGO JULY 30, 2009 Girls U12 soccer team took the Gold Medal at Iowa games. Ground breaking at Reinbeck Daycare Center. Class of ’46 had their 63rd class reunion. Mt. Caramel Catholic Church in celebrating 150 years on August 16. Beth Johannns, RN, BSN received her certification in infection control at the Grundy Hospital. Grundy Co. Hospital awards 3-$1,000 scholarships for 2009-2010 school year to Nicole Onnen, Sara Hook and Kelsee Huisman. G-R Brett Bengen named North defensive MVP in the Shrine Bowl. Volunteers needed to replace damaged playground in Parkersburg. 20 YEARS AGO JULY 29, 1999 Christine Schreck, Hudson, shows Champion market lamb and exhibited the Grand champion Grundy Co. halter horse. Derrick Shinn, Reinbeck, exhibited the Champion overall garden exhibit at the fair. Reinbeck Action Post #242 earns Robbins Trophy for attaining the highest percentage of average membership turned in for past five years, Donald Rehder, 88, formerly of Gladbrook, died July 12 in Gilbert, AZ. Lester Bloxham, 92, Grundy Center, died July 21 at the Grundy Holspital. Ervin Thomsen, 91, died July 24 at his home. Harold Aswegan, 70, Grundy Center, died July 25 at the Grundy Hospital. Bert Brubaker, Reinbeck, 57, died July 24 at Allen Holspital. 30 YEARS AGO AUGUST 18, 1989 Everett Seward, 84, Reinbeck, died August 4. Lyman Petersen, Lincoln, died Aug 5 at Allen Hospital. Class of ’49 celebrated their 40th class reunion. PCI donated $1,000 to Reinbeck’s Chamber of Commerce for the 4th of July fireworks. Maurice Mitchell, 63, died August 1. Karen Fogt arrived home from Spain on July 29. She spent two months in Spain. Voorhies celebrated their 6th annual Voorhies Days on August 4 & 5. 40 YEARS AGO AUGUST 16. 1979 Bobbie Rickert, Jennifer Nash and Angela Peters will each present a tap dance at Bill Riley’s 20th annual Talent Show at the state fair. Merle Willer, 55, died August 13 at his home of an apparent heart attack. Mary Frier & Chris Witt, Reinbeck and Andy Berner of Traer, participated in a 93 mile week-end bicycle ride around Grundy Co. 50 YEARS AGO AUGUST 14, 1969 Three men were killed when their car plunged through a barricade near a washed out bridge east of Union. Willard Lee “Jupe” McCommons, 78, died at Schoitz Hospital. Loyd Cartensen operators of the Reinbeck Bakery is announcing the bakery will close until further notice. Joe Clapp has been appointed new plant manager at Custom Farm Service in Reinbeck. Sylvan Koupal has won the 1956 Olds, given by Jim Denning, as a special prize during Sweet C orn Days. Gov. Robert Ray will make an appearance at Reinbeck Memorial Bldg. on Aug. 26.
