James Dale Novotny, 41, addresses of LeShara and Fremont, Neb., was sentenced on April 23 to three, 30-day jail sentences to be served consecutively by Tama County Magistrate Richard Vander Mey and assessed fines and surcharges totaling $263. In handing down the sentences, the 30-day term for following too closely was suspended by Magistrate Vander Mey. A notice of appeal of the sentences was filed on April 24 asking for review by a Tama County District Court judge. Novotny remains free from custody awaiting a court decision. He also faces District Court trial set for July 15 on a charge of failure to appear earlier for sentencing on the traffic charges on March 29. Novotny was found guilty by a Magistrate Court Jury on three traffic charges involving a crash which claimed the life of Charlene Kay Rosenfelder, 64, Tama, who died on April 5, 2018. The trial was held in February and resulted in conviction for following too closely, control of vehicle- reduced speed and driving on wrong side of a two-way roadway. The charges were filed by the Iowa State Patrol. The collision occurred about 10 miles east of Tama on U.S. Highway 30.
