30 Years Ago January 20, 1989 Westbrook Acres is very proud to honor three of its employees for 20 or more years of service. Board President Ivan Gethmann presented Alice Hamann, Elnora Schroeder, ans Ione Stevenson with their honorariums. Leonard “Jack” Barger, 78, passed away at his residence Saturday. Steve and Janet Williams are the proud parents of a baby boy born January 4. He was named James Andrew. He joins a sister Kim, and brother Thomas. Gordon and Jackie Weatherly, Garwin, and Robert Malisch, Tok, Alaska, announce the engagement of their daughter, Brenda Marie, to Ryan Lee Jensen, son of Richard and DeLoris Jensen of Tama. The couple will be married February 18. 40 Years Ago January 26, 1979 The 1979 annual Marshall County Pork Producers Banquet was held at the Marshalltown High School cafeteria. Rhonda Sue Groth, rural Gladbrook, was crowned the new Marshall County Pork Queen. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Lynch will celebrate their 50the wedding anniversary. Once again the snow and wind moved into the area. Blowing snow over the weekend closed many of the rural roads. Tuesday morning the snow arrived leaving 2 to 3 inches, giving us in Gladbrook, Garwin, Lincoln area a total of above 17 inches on the ground. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Casebolt are proud to announce the birth of a daughter born January 21. She has been named Megan Ann. Megan joins two brothers, Brett 6, and Eric, 4. Mr. Louis Staker, 77, of Gladbrook passed away at the Westbrook Acres Nursing Home Saturday morning where he had a patient since December. 50 Years Ago January 10, 1969 Mr. and Mrs. Glen Lowry of rural Garwin will celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on January 15. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Hass of Morrison are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Jane, to Thomas E. Tedore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Tedore of Cedar Falls. Richard D. Schultz, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Schultz of Gladbrook, was promoted to Army specialist five November 29 near Pleiku, Vietnam, where he is assigned to the 4th Infantry Division. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Struwe of Gladbrook will celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Mrs. Wilbur Luethje, 34, Traer, passed away at the Evangelical Hospital in Marshalltown, Sunday evening where she had been admitted earlier in the day. She had been in failing health for the past two years. The Gladbrook Fire Department has been getting an extremely large number of false fire calls the past few days. In fact, there were five last Saturday and five on Monday morning of this week. Miss Sally Turner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Galt Turner of Gladbrook, and Rick Holada, son of Mrs. Bertha Holada of Cicero, Illinois, and E. L. Holada of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, were united in marriage on December 21. Sheldon Overton, 61, of Gladbrook, passed away at his home Sunday. He had been in failing health for the past two years. Miss Marcella Speicher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Speicher of Gladbrook, Larry Dean Small, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Small, Marshalltown, were united in marriage December 20. Miss Rosemary K. Reiker, of Peoria, Illinois, and Ronald L. Sievers, of Peoria, Illinois, were united in marriage December 28. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Rieker of Brimfield, Illinois, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sievers of Gladbrook. Plans for a summer wedding is being made by Miss Susan, whose engagement to Donald D. Clow is announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo F. Sutter of Cedar Rapids. 60 Years Ago January 14, 1959 Funeral services were held in Traer Tuesday for former Judge B. Frank Thomas, 81, who passed away Sunday at Hyattsvillle, Maryland. Death attributed to bronchial pneumonia and complications of old age. The Gladbrook Pantherettes are Tama County Champions for the third year after walloping Dysart 63-41 in the finals Saturday night in the local gymnasium. Seven hundred and twelve farm animals have been killed by dogs in Tama county during 1958. 70 Years Ago January 14, 1949 Doris Storjohann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Storjohann, who farm southeast of Gladbrook, became the bride of B. Eugene Hite, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orla Hite, who live north of Gladbrook, on New Years Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Dierks, who farm northwest of Gladbrook will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Godfried Otto, who farm two miles south of Reinbeck will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Announcement has been made of the marriage of Wilma Slot, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Slot of Pella, and Dwayne Rohweder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Rohweder. 80 Years Ago January 13, 1939 C. E. Walters, lifelong resident of Tama county and special assistant Attorney General of Iowa and judge of the Seventeenth Judicial District, passed away Friday from a few days illness from pneumonia in Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown, having been taken there earl Sunday morning, January 1. Mrs. Nellie Smith announced the marriage of her oldest daughter, Mildred Smith Kirtley to O. G. Powell, of Des Moines, January 5. Mrs. Delilah Rosenberger, one of Gladbrook’s oldest citizens celebrated her 84th birthday. 90 Years Ago January 17, 1929 Miss ida Stanley passed away at her home in Chillicothe, Missouri. She was a victim of the flu. Miss Stanley was a former Gladbrook girl and grew to young womanhood on a farm near Gladbrook. Magdalena Rohweder passed away January 11 at the home of her brother near Gladbrook.
