Letter to the Editor

To all Tama County residents:

Hello to all! This is Rudy Papakee, the Tama County Tobacco Grant Coordinator. As many of you are already aware, the state of Iowa has taken many steps to help curb smoking and the negative effects related to smoking and second hand smoke. With the successful adoption of the $1.00 tax increase per pack of cigarettes and the Smokefree Air Act (SAA), the state is moving forward to ensure all Iowans are protected.

With the passing of the SAA, there are some requirements for business owners within Tama County to ensure they are adhering to the law. For instance, did you know:

All businesses are required to display a “No Smoking” sign at every entrance to their establishment

“No Smoking” signs are to be displayed in every vehicle that constitutes a public place, place of employment, or area declared nonsmoking

The “No Smoking” signs must display

The words “No Smoking” or the Nonsmoking Symbol

The Smokefree Helpline “1-888-944-2247”

The Office Website

Ashtrays must be removed from nonsmoking places regulated by the Smokefree Air Act.

From time to time I will be out and about within the county to see if I can provide any assistance or answer any questions business owners may have in regards to the law. You can also find information about the Smokefree Air Act. Here you can find more information about the laws and sanctions for compliance and how to print signs for your establishment. If help with signs or any other information is needed, I can be reached at the Tama County ISU Extension office at (641) 484-2703. I look forward to working with Tama County residents and business owners to ensure all are provided a safe and healthy smoke free environment.
