Letter to the Editor-Adam Scherling, MHA Administrator, Grundy County Memorial Hospital

To the Editor: As our nation rises to meet the extraordinary challenges of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, I want you to assure you that health and safety are our priorities at Grundy County Memorial Hospital. As we prepared for the pandemic, the hospital reacted quickly to care for those in our communities who might become ill with COVID-19. Staff education and acquiring personal protective equipment (PPE) to shield caregivers from the virus were our focus. We suspended elective outpatient services as required by the state to help keep people at home – all while making every effort to protect our patients, staff and communities. Our communities reacted quickly as well, by supporting our caregivers with donated meals and treats. We were overwhelmed by the donations of PPE – including N95 masks, gloves, and gowns – and the colorful hand sewn masks and head coverings that so many of you made and donated for our caregivers. Community members also responded generously to an appeal to help us purchase a new sterilizer that is re-processing N95 masks in order to extend their life. We are humbled by this amazing show of support. Now that the state has given the go-ahead, we have planned a phased approach to begin most of the health care services that were scaled back or stopped due to our COVID-19 response efforts. Many measures are in place at our hospital to maintain safety for our patients and employees as we re-open. For instance, all hospital employees and visiting patients undergo a health screening upon entry to the hospital. The use of masks is required for all. We will follow new recommendations for testing admitted and surgical patients. Enhanced cleaning and disinfection processes, including use of a UV light disinfection system, are in place throughout the hospital. We have all heard how critically important it is to practice physical or “social” distancing. That’s why, unfortunately, visitor restrictions remain in place. In this uncertain time, I am confident we will get through this national crisis as a community. We can be kind to one another. We can help one another–even from a distance. Remember: We are all in this together. You can count on us to be here for you – ready to meet the challenges of the pandemic and prepared to care for all of your health care needs. Please stay safe and well, Adam Scherling, MHA Administrator, Grundy County Memorial Hospital
