Message from Our Mayor

How is this for March coming in like a lamb – 61 degrees on March 1st. It has been a long time since I wrote a letter so I have to get caught up on a few things. First off I want to wish a Happy Birthday to Marian Schultz on her 100th birthday a few weeks back. She is still living alone and enjoying life. Keep it up Marian! Next, congratulations go out to Conner Murty for qualifying for State Wrestling Tournament last week. Conner finished his Junior year with a 35-5 record and made it to the second round of State Wrestling Tournament. Conner is the son of Steve and Erin Murty who live one mile east of Gladbrook on Highway 96. He wrestles for East Marshall-GMG schools. Conner is very active in school, 4-H, the community and church and is a great example and leader to our young kids. Thank you and keep up the good work! Speaking of wrestling, Jo and I have had the fun and pleasure of watching our grandsons, Easton and Casein, along with several other Gladbrook kids wrestle for the North Tama youth team. All of the Kindergarten through 6th grade kids are doing great in wrestling and having fun. It is fun to watch these young kids improving their skills and also learning how to take both winning and losing as part of life. These young boys go to several wrestling tournaments each winter to compete with several 100 other kids their own age. The tournaments start with the National Anthem and it’s great to see all these young boys get to their feet and stand at attention with their hand over their heart without being told to. Too bad some of our pro athletes can’t honor our flag that way and learn from these kids. If you have had the opportunity to drive down Gladbrook’s Main St. any of the last several weekends, you may have seen up to 100 or more cars from the Gladbrook Bowl up to the Gladbrook Theatre. What a great sight! A lot of people are bowling and enjoying a good sandwich or pizza at the Gladbrook Bowl or a good movie at the theatre. Or they may be at Spanky’s for a beer and a great supper. If you want a very good steak, try Spanky’s – they are great! And by the way, Mandy has told me that all of her meat comes from Hometown Family Market. Great job Tandi for having such great quality meats! Everything you need for your weekend fun is available right here in Gladbrook, Iowa. Thank you to all the above businesses for making Gladbrook such a great place to live and enjoy life. This Saturday night, March 7, the Crayon Corner Learning Center is having an adult prom and supper as a fund raiser for the Day Care. Our Day Care is about full and is running great under our present Board and Leadership. They have a 4A accreditation from the state which is the highest. Come Saturday night and have a good time and help out our daycare financially. See you there! Our new water meters are being installed now. We are over half done and it is going pretty fast. We are seeing a change in some of our readings which should help close the gap on uncollected water. We have been running from 400,000 to 500,000 gallons per month behind since we went on Rural Water. That figure is shrinking. One last thing in regard to the buildings on Main St., we were in court this past week bringing contempt of court charges because the buildings were not cleaned out as previously ordered by the court. The judge has not ruled yet but we should be hearing from the District Court soon.
