GMG Elementary Leads Hunger Relief Effort in Green Mountain/Garwin in Marshall County
Green Mountain, Iowa – Hunger is a serious problem for some families in Iowa. GMG Elementary students are stepping up to help food-insecure kids and families in Marshall and Tama County by holding an Outreach Program Food Packaging Event at GMG Elementary. “When we heard about this program to package nutritious domestic meals, we knew it was the perfect way for our school to lead this food relief effort,” said Chris Frimml, Elementary Principal. “This is a unique assembly line process, and any person of any age or ability can be a part of this food packaging event. It is not only a fun way to work together, but it will have an immediate positive impact on our community.” The meals are created by Iowa State University’s Food Science Department and are nutritious and tasty. All of the meals will stay in our community and be distributed by various organizations. GMG Elementary is hoping to package 15,000 meals on December 17, 2019 at the school. In order to package those meals, GMG Elementary had to raise $4500. Money was raised through donations from our parent organization, parents, and student led fundraising. A basket silent auction was held at conferences, and students have led a change drive, pajama day, and jelly bean contest. The Outreach Program was started by Floyd Hammer and Kathy Hamilton of Union Iowa. A non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, Outreach has helped to package more than 550 million meals that have been distributed across the United States and around the world. Outreach Meal Packaging Events are set up across the United States to engage businesses, religious and civic organizations, schools, and volunteers of all ages to package nutritious meals for the hungry. Co-Founders Floyd Hammer and Kathy Hamilton were invited to the White House by President Barack Obama and former President H.W.Bush to be honored with the 5,000th Point of Light Award.
