“Piano Open House” at Westbrook Acres By Margaret Thomsen

A “Piano Open House” celebrating of the purchase of a new Yamaha piano for the residents of Westbrook Acres Nursing Home in Gladbrook was held on October 23. It was a project of the Northwest Tama County Ministerial Association. Pictured are Pastor Mark Keefer, Co-chair Rev. Keith Lambertson of Garwin entertained Westbrook Acres residents playing the piano. Word has it, he also brought out his famous accordion.

The Northwest Tama County Ministerial Association project titled “88 Keys in 88 Days” was celebrated by residents and guests at Westbrook Acres Nursing Home in Gladbrook on October 23. The afternoon was spent enjoying the beautiful music played on the new piano. The project included Garwin United Methodist Church, Chapel Church of rural Gladbrook, Gladbrook United Methodist Church, Salem Church of Lincoln and Peace United Church of Christ of Gladbrook. Rev. Barb Muhs, Salem Church and Chairman of the Ministerial Association and Jeanne Paustian, Peace Church Secretary, chaired the project with the initial goal of collecting funds for the new piano in 88 days. Jeanne Paustian stated, “Many enjoyed giving funds to purchase a key. A wooden key board on display at the Gladbrook City Center was colored in as the funds came in.” The fund drive began the end of March and in just 28 days $8,661 had been collected. A new Yamaha piano was purchased from West Music. The project will end with the purchase of large print song books containing a variety of music. Westbrook Acres Nursing Home Administrator Kelly Larson stated, ” The Westbrook Acres family would like to thank everyone for attending the “Piano Open House” which was held on October 23 at the facility. We are so blessed to have a community like Gladbrook! This piano will be something that will provide wonderful music and memories for many years to come! We would like to thank each and every person who contributed to this wonderful gift.” The afternoon of celebration included listening to pianists from churches and the surrounding area. A vast variety of music was played to the delight of residents and guests gathered. Entertaining at the new Yamaha piano were: Sue Koster, Chapel Church of Gladbrook; Samantha DeWitt, Gladbrook United Methodist Church; June Bessman, Peace Church of Gladbrook; Ila Jean Boerm, Garwin United Methodist Church; Deb Wentzien, Salem Church of Lincoln; and special guests Keith Lambertson of Garwin and Tomomi McWhirter of Traer.
