First day of school at GMG Garwin Campus By Margaret Thomsen

August 23 marked the first day of classes at GMG Junior and Senior High in Garwin. Students, faculty and staff were welcomed by Principal Nathan Kleinmeyer. “We are GMG! Take pride. We are GMG” was his theme and he got all on board with the chant. Mr. Kleinmeyer told students, “Wake up each day and remember you go to GMG. We are making one change at a time and it starts here, it starts today. We all need to take pride, that we are GMG.” Again this year only clear beverages in clear containers will be allowed. Back-packs are to stay in the lockers. GMG is a closed campus – which means you come and you do not leave. Basic rules were explained and teachers and staff were introduced. It was noted that GMG will dismiss one hour early every Wednesday. This time will be utilized for staff development and as a mandatory study hall until 4 PM for those involved in sports or having issues with grades. Mr. Kleinmeyer explained, “We want you to be successful. There will be no reason for failing grades. Be respectful. Be kind. Do something to make your future self proud each and every day.” A number of positive changes have taken place at the Garwin Campus. The Cheerleaders and Student Council have been working hard on landscaping the entrance. Staff has installed new LED lights in the cafeteria and halls. A fresh coat of paint and carpet in several rooms has taken place. In the hall just outside the new gym entrance a colorful and welcoming mural has been painted by Briana Spurlin. It depicts the fall sports of Cross Country, Football, Basketball and Cross Country. Plans are underway to expand the mural to include additional GMG activities. Everyone gathered beneath the entry-way flag pole to say the “Pledge of Allegiance” Tradition continued as the Senior Class of 2019 assembled for a first day of school group picture. All things are in place for a fantastic year as we remember – “We are GMG”!
