Clausen Barbershop Re-locates By Betty Dahms

John Clausen, local barber, has relocated his barbershop. After 39 years at his shop located at 412 2nd Street, he has moved to 418 2nd Street, in the DeWitt building, next to Spanky’s Restaurant. The move comes as a result of the closing of the Modern Beauty building, which housed the Modern Beauty Salon and Clausen Barbershop, and owned by Sue Hamann. After the fire at the Wentzien Hardware in downtown Gladbrook back in December of 2016, some of the business houses are having to have their buildings demolished because of fire and water damage. John started his career by attending Waterloo Barber College in the fall of 1962. Since then he has worked in Conrad, his first job as a barber, then on to Charles City. After he served in the U. S. Army, he returned to Gladbrook, except for one year he practiced in Marshalltown, John has been in Gladbrook. Some will remember when John’s shop was in the “basement”, but for the last 39 years he has been at the Modern Beauty building. With help from Mike DeWitt, offering him space in his building, and his moving crew of Dennis Haack and Doug Gethmann helping to pull together the shop, John is able to open up to the public once again to offer his barbering experience. John will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays by appointment. You can make an appointment by calling (641) 473-2669.
