American Legion Birthday

A quartet from Peace Church was the entertainment for the American Legion Birthday party held March 20 by the Gladbrook Auxiliary. Members are (l-r) Pat Clausen, Sara DeBerg, Larry Miell, and Dave McGowan.

The Gladbrook Auxiliary hosted a March birthday party on Mar. 20th in honor of the 98th birthday of the American Legion. After a prayer from Chaplain Joyce Swangel, everyone enjoyed a covered dish supper. A quartet from Peace Church, Sara DeBerg, Dave McGowan, Pat Clausen, and Larry Miell, accompanied by June Bessman was the entertainment. They sang “Sunshine In My Soul”, “Battle Hymn of the Republic”, and “America the Beautiful”. They also read the history on the respective songs. The group also led the singing of the military songs. The veterans always enjoy standing for their Branch of Service.

Americanism Chairman Lisa Reinhard gave her yearly report. She talked about the Community Flag Day and Veterans’ Day Services at Westbrook Acres. Lisa stated that very soon in memory of her parents, Jim & Alma Gilchrist, there will be a flag disposal box outside the Memorial Building.

Tama County & Post Commander Ron Busch brought greetings. He thanked Bob Knaack and his gang that scrubbed and waxed the last week. He commanded the Gladbrook Post for all they accomplish throughout the year.

Unit President Jeanne Paustian read a brief history on the founding of the American Legion. She presented a birthday cake to Commander Ron Busch. A special thanks to Maxine Bottema for making and decorating the cake. Hostesses besides Maxine were Andrea Jordan and Melissa Sienknecht.

The evening ended with singing “God Bless America”.
