The Gladbrook Auxiliary welcomed special guests as they honored all our Veterans for Veterans Day. A potluck supper was hosted by the Unit on Monday evening, November 21 at 6:30pm with Sue Koster, Chris Hickman and Jane Frericks as kitchen chairs. Commander Ron Busch and President Jeanne Paustian welcomed the group with a fitting poem and each introduced their special guests. Present were State Legion Commander Ken Rochholz of Durant, District Commander Neal Schrage and wife, Laura of Parkersburg, our own County Commander Ron Busch and State SAL Detachment Cmdr Gary Bonesteel and wife Kaye of Shellsburg and Nikki Paustian, Nat’l Children and Youth Aux Chairman. Pat Clausen led the group in singing patriotic songs with Sue Koster at the piano, ending with lively renditions of each veteran’s military song. Pat had each Veteran telll of their branch of service, years served and where. We learned that Dist Cmdr Neal had guarded the “Tomb of the Unknowns” and the J. F. Kennedy Gravesite in Arlington Cemetery for over 14 months. District Junior President Kayla Vavroch of Gladbrook brought greetings from the Juniors and told of her projects. County President and Unit Sec’y Jolene Denbow presented county announcements and had a special presentation. With all Unit members standing, she presented Nikki Clapp with her PUFL or ‘Paid up for Life’ membership card from the Unit as a token of our pride and appreciation for her Auxiliary work as she travels the journey to becoming the National ALA President in 2019-2020. Each guest then gave greetings from their respective office, commending the Post on their good work and membership retention. The program closed with all singing ‘God Bless America’ and many pictures for our history books.
