Tama Co. Supervisors By Joyce Wiese
County Engineer Lyle Brehm reported to the Tama County Board of Supervisors, Larry Vest, Kendall Jordan and Dan Anderson, on the latest information on the Chambers Bridge. The Chambers bridge has been closed for some time and has been offered for sale with no takers. Brehm reported a few weeks ago that he was planning in removing the old bridge and replacing it with a new one. This is in the making and Brehm has received a contract for the Chambers Bridge and is in the process of getting this back so he can work with the contractor. The contractor will be PCI. $2,396,000 will be furnished from Federal funds. Brehm says he is anxious to get all details so he can work with the contractor for a starting date. Brehm also reported there was two bridges northwest of town he would be working on yet this year, as well as doing some work on a bridge in Columbia Township. Brehm says no date has been set on replacing bridges on E Avenue going from Highway 30 into Montour. Brehm told supervisors this road had been a problem for many years as every time it flooded work was necessary to reopen the road. Brehm said at the entry of the old river bridge over the Iowa River had a large hole at one end. This bridge was built in 1927. The bridge north of the Iowa River Bridge has always been a problem for washing out whenever there is high water. Brehm hinted he felt it would be wise to close this road permanently as it would be at this time over a $3,000,000 project. Brehm said it was a road of high traffic, but very expensive to maintain. Two new trucks have been bought by the road department at a cost of $220,431.88. Brehm says they will still need a couple more truck in the near future. In other business the board postponed next Monday’s meeting, September 5th to Tuesday, September 6th, due to the Labor Day holiday. Supervisor meetings start at 9:30 a.m. Claims approved for the past week came to $326,896.93.
