By John Speer Central Iowa Press jspeer @tamatoledonews.com A Belle Plaine man, Juan Torres, was freed from the Tama County Jail after posting 10 percent of $100,000 cash bond on Thursday, Jan. 14. District Court Judge Mary Chicchelly ordered Torres to be supervised by the Iowa Department of Correctional Services and to reside at a Belle Plaine address. Torres, 64, faces charges of drunken driving – homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving on wrong side ot roadway. He was arrested on Jan. 5 by the Iowa State Patrol in the 1500 block of 6th Avenue in Belle Plaine according to Tama County jail records. A State Patrol accident report says Torres was the driver of a westbound vehicle which collided with a car which was eastbound on U.S. Highway 30 about 10 miles east of Tama on Aug. 15, 2015. The report states Torres crossed the centerline of the highway, continued to the eastbound shoulder then corrected back and collided with the eastbound Rabus car. The driver of the second vehicle, Robert Lee Rabus, 74, Cedar Rapids, died of injuries suffered in the collision on Sept. 2 at University Hospitals in Iowa City. A passenger in the Rabus car, Nancy Jane Rabus, 73,, also of Cedar Rapids, and Torres were both injured the patrol report states. Also before Judge Chicchelly in Tama County District Court in Toledo: Anita Nevarez-Ramos, 27, Marshalltown, pleaded guilty to possession of synthetic marijuana. She was fined and assessed court costs, DARE and Law enforcement initiative surcharges totaling $720 and sentenced to two days in jail. her driver’s license was revoked for 180 days. Nevarez-Ramos was charged on June 12 at the Meskwaki Casino, rural Tama by Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police Officer Jacob Molitor. Jamie Katherine Sells, 36, Des Moines, pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine, 3rd or subsequent offense. Judgment was deferred and she was placed on probation for three years under supervision of the Department of Correctional Services. Sells was directed to pay a civil penalty and assessed court costs totaling $1,025. Sells was charged on July 10, 2015, at the Meskwaki Bingo • Casino • Hotel by Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police Officer Eric Lindsey. Before Judge Kevin McKeever in Tama County District Court in Toledo: Justin Lee Anderson, 21, Tama, entered a written guilty plea to 1st offense drunken driving. He was fined and assessed court costs totaling $1,798, sentenced to two days in jail and directed to pay jail fees. He is to complete a Drinking Driver’s Course and his driver’s license was revoked for 180 days. Anderson was charged on Oct. 11, 2015, at U.S. Highway 30 Expressway and B Avenue by Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police Officer Kole Northland. Patricia Diane Benters, 34, Shellsburg, Iowa, entered a written plea of guilty to 2nd offense possession of methamphetamine. He was sentenced to s suspended two-year jail term and assessed a fine and court costs totaling $1,336. She was placed on supervised probation to the department of correctional Services for two years and her driver’s license was revoked for 180 days. Benters was originally charged with 3rd offense possession of methamphetamine and prohibited acts on Sept. 3, 2015, in the 2600 block of U.s. Highway 30 by Tama County Deputy Sheriff Brian Randall.
