Tama Co. Supervisors By: Joyce Wiese
Tama County Supervisors Larry Vest, Kendall Jordan and Dan Anderson met with Pastor Kenny Mervin, Pastor of The Meskwaki Celebration Assembly of God (aka Tama Assembly of God) Church, a property located at 900 East Fifth Street, Iowa. This was commercial property at the time of purchase and taxable. This property is next to the County Engineer’s office in Tama , Iowa. This property was purchased on August 14, 2014 under the name of Tama Assembly of God, at which time the church took possession of the property. As tax work, September 2015 taxes due are for values from July through December of 2015 and March taxes are due for January through June of 2015. Tama Assembly of God has possession for 10 1/2 months of this tax cycle. According to the county assessor the church was considered exempt property from property taxes as of October 1, 2014. The buyers were reimbursed $702.00 for taxes due up to the date of sale by the sellers. Taxes for July through December of 2014 were $2760.00, and the same for January through June of 2015, making a total due of $5520.00. $1380.00 was paid and $4140 exempted. The property will now be exempted. Supervisors received some exiting news this month, according to Chairman Larry Vest. For the first time in eight years the Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center is debt free. When the building was built in 2006 and 2007 there was considerable debt with the debt increasing and then decreasing with an expansion added in 2014 making the debt considerably more. When they received their annual state reimbursement check totaling $700,833, slightly over what was anticipated, mortgage and BLOC could be paid off. For a couple of years they have predicted the pay off of all debt by December 2015, and were relieved the payoff came sooner than predicted. The road report given by County Engineer Lyle Brehm states that the work on the East bridge in Elberon is proceeding nicely and it is expected the deck will be placed within the next couple of weeks if weather permits. The bridge near Gladbrook will soon be useable. The grading project at 310th Street is completed. They have created an approach pad that will help vehicles take off from the stop sign. This will be of great help to farmers transporting crops. Claims approved for payment for the past week came $161,944.20.
