Tama Co. Supervisors By: Joyce Wiese

The Tama county Board of Supervisors met Monday morning, August 10, with Terry Johnson, with an update of Genesis Corporation, and the changing from the Old County Home building to the Discovery program, moving residents into houses to make a more homelike atmosphere and expanding integration into the community. Johnson told supervisors the old county home building would be vacant most likely by September 1. Johnson says they have two homes being remodeled to make them efficient for the residents, and it is expected they will be ready for occupancy by September 1. Johnson stated the home they already have is working real well. He stated a couple of residents are living on an acreage and are happy there. However, he stated transportation is a problem in this case. Just a year ago Title 19 started integrating residents into the community with a home on Columbian Drive between Tama and Toledo. Johnson stated they have until March 2019 to have all residents integrated into communities in a more home like atmosphere. Johnson stated the old County Home building was in good shape. However the boiler system needs work. Johnson thanked the county supervisors for keeping the building in good shape and helping make everything accessible and in good living conditions. Michelle Yuska, county treasurer, was present and asked for abatement of mobile home taxes on a mobile home left behind the bowling alley. Yuska said the owners had moved out all of the mobile homes except for this one. Yuska said this mobile home was not in condition for anyone to live in. Taxes to be abated come to $1472. Bob Etzel asked for approval to deposit a check in the LAD (Land Acquisition and Development) account for around $4000. Etzel stated there was a 9 acre field they had planted to special grasses for butterflies, moths, etc. By error, the ground was aerial sprayed and killed all the planting. The farmer hiring the aerial spraying paid for the damages. Tammy Wise, Human Resources Manager and Insurance Administrator told supervisors they would be having a mandatory training on Wednesday, September 9, 2015. This will be a two part training held on the same day. This will be an annual Safety Seminar as well as the annual Harassment Training. Chuck Goodman from Arthur J. Gallagher will present the Safety portion and Judy Funk from Heartland Insurance Risk Pool will be presenting the Harassment Training. Supervisors accepted the resignation of interim medical examiner Dr. McCune from Marshalltown and appointed Dr. Bethel from Marshalltown as new medical examiner. Dr. Bethel is a retired physician. Sheriff Dennis Kucera was present for discussion on Public Safety on the Court House and Public buildings. Maintenance Director Dirk Henle stated when court is in session the back door to the court rooms is locked. There are cameras in place. Many offices are locked. There are plans in place for evacuation in case of flood, fire or other disaster situations. They will set up a time for discussion of this situation. Tama County levies were approved. The General School operating fund levy shows South Tama with the highest levy at 14.59211 and the lowest is North Tama at 8.77742. County Engineer Lyle Brehm told supervisors the deck had been poured on the bridge near Gladbrook last Thursday. Brehm says the bridge crew is moving to 390th Street now for work. Claims for the past week came to $78,921.95.
