G-R School Board By Madeline Mussig
The Gladbrook-Reinbeck School Board had a joint meeting with the Eldora-New Providence School board and new superintendent Jay Mathis on June 1 at 5:00 PM at Johnny Ray’s Restaurant in Grundy Center. The meeting was facilitated by Dr. Roark Horn, AEA 267 Chief Administrator. Dr. Horn presented information on a superintendent study. The study was regarding schools with shared superintendents. His research findings on shared superintendents conclude that when the two school boards communicate well and create efficiency, the shared superintendent position is effective. There was discussion around possible problems with the new superintendent position. Winter school delays and closings were one of the first issues brought up, considering the distance between the two schools. It was agreed that it is up to the superintendent to appoint people to check roads, but he could take recommendations from the board. Other issues included school calendar events overlapping, coordinating monthly meetings, and avoiding disruption between the two communities. Mr. Mathis stated his current plan for the 2015-16 school year is to spend Monday and Thursday at Gladbrook-Reinbeck and Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday at Eldora-New Providence. Though this is his current plan, it is situational. Finally, Dr. Horn spoke on categories that define the work of superintendents, including things such as being an instructional/visionary leader, student centered leader, and board relationships and management. Dr. Horn closed the meeting by saying that he believes sharing the superintendent position will work well between the two schools. The meeting was adjourned at 6:06.
