G-R School Board By Madeline Mussig

The Gladbrook-Reinbeck School Board Meeting was called to order on Monday, March 23, at 6:30 p.m. by Board president Josh Hemann. Karen Mussig, visitor, spoke to the board about the recent decision to close the Gladbrook attendance center. The agenda for the meeting was approved. There was much discussion regarding the fundraising forms utilized by staff. In old business, different scenarios were presented for the hiring of a new superintendent. The board is currently looking at possibly sharing a superintendent with another school, hiring a full time superintendent, or having a part time superintendent also be the elementary school principal, which is the current situation. Members of the board will meet early next week to discuss further options for the superintendent position. It was moved and seconded to receive Receipt and Filing of Recommendation Regarding Termination of Certified Staff Employment contracts. Resignations from Sara Dostal and Erin Becker were also approved. The board approved a 28 E Sharing Agreement for .5 K-6 Art with Grundy Center, allowing all specials to be offered in the afternoon. Brian Anderson from the Reinbeck Pre-school requested that the preschool keep a room in the elementary building. Because of the plans for next year, it would not be possible for the building to house K-6 and have rooms designated to the preschool. The possibility for moving central office was discussed, although no further decisions have been made at this time. Chris Frischmeyer and Carrie Thesfeld from the Reinbeck Daycare shared their plans for adding on to the daycare later this year. Financial options were presented, as well as possible plans for additional parking. Summer school will be held at the same time as last year and will also have the same pay structure for teachers. Last year, 32 kids attended summer school in grades K-8. Two possible start dates were discussed for the 2015-16 school year. If the state allows, school will start on August 24 and end on May 26. The alternative option is school beginning on August 31 and ending on June 1. These two schedules do not include any school days, nor does the schedule include any built in snow days. Athletic director, John Olson, talked about the possibility for sharing spring and summer sports due to declining numbers. The board gave him the okay to email other athletic directors from the area to ask if they would be interested in sharing. Current sharing agreements with North Tama and Grundy Center were approved. The First Reading–Series 700- Non-Instructional Operations and Business Services was approved. There was also board approval for the 1:1 Computers- High School Apple Lease. It was moved and seconded to accept four late open enrollment applications, but the motion failed when voted on. It was approved for Val Ehlers to sell four card catalogs to the Calico Hen House for $450. In other business, it was stated that there are currently 57 approved open enrollments out of the G-R school district for 2015-16 school year. It was suggested by board member Doug Rowe to look into additional financial cuts. Majority of the board agreed and Superintendent Holloway will provide the board with options for cuts at the April 8th meeting. In the Superintendent’s Report, it was suggested that board members contact families who have chosen to enroll out of the G-R district. Further discussion will take place at the next work session. Mr. Holloway shared a draft of possible bus stops for the upcoming school year in Gladbrook. Each stop would be within a three block radius. Changes will have to be made per the advisement of Gladbrook City Clerk, Lori Bearden. Bearden stated that two of the stops are on truck routes. Athletic Director, John Olson shared proposals for the fall and winter athletic practice schedule for next year. At 9:58 PM, the meeting was adjourned. The next school board meeting with take place on April 8.
