14th Annual Faculty vs. Students Basketball at G-R Middle School By Mrs. Bailey

As always, the Annual Faculty vs. Students basketball game at the G-R Middle School was exciting and entertaining. Each year Coach Olson designs a tournament to determine the best middle school team. The winning team has the opportunity to play the ‘top’ adult basketball players at G-R. This year’s winner was a 7th grade team comprised of Abby Schildroth, Aiden Wyatt, Chloe Ritchey, Cullen Eiffler, Eli Thede, Ella Murphy, Jordan Sherman, Kale Hassleman, and Tyler Tscherter. The best G-R adults who showed up were Coach Buskohl, Mr. Strub, Mrs. Welter, Mrs. Plett, Mr. Charley, Principal Aden, Mr. Swenson, Mr. Anderson, Mr. Hemann, and Coach Olson. Who was the winner? It’s all in how you score the game. If you score the game by turnovers, the “G-R Faculty” was soundly defeated, with Mrs. Plett dribbling off her foot early in the game. To her credit, though, Mrs. Plett led all players in rebounds, with an even number of rebounds on each end of the court. So if you score the game by rebounds, the Faculty won the game. Years ago when my daughters were playing basketball, I started the MSH column in my stat book. I kept track of who got the assists, the deflections, the steals; I recorded who had great passes and who played tough defense. I put anything in this column that showed the players could “Make Something Happen and lead the Rebels to a victory.” If the winner of this game were determined by the marks in this column, the Seventh Graders clearly had the edge, making countless steals, deflections, and great passes. Tyler Tscherter led this category, and Ella Murphy recorded the only ‘save.’ If you look at points scored, each team won a half with the Faculty winning the first half and the Students scoring more points in the second half. Fouls were even – unless you consider the technical foul Referee Lauren Bengen called on Coach Olson for the delay of the game. It seemed odd that Mrs. Ciddio marched her second graders out of the gym before the game was over. We thought perhaps they’d been naughty, but, no, they were all grinning from ear-to-ear. We thought perhaps they had been reading a good book and wanted to hurry back to class to finish it before dismissal time. But, no. They marched out one door and came running in the other chasing Coach Olson with water bottles. Coach scurried around the gym and then chased Principal Aden with a bucket of water. So, who was the winner? I’ll let you decide for yourself.
