Tama County District Court

Before Judge Fae Hoover Grinde in Tama County District Court in Toledo:

Dustin Jerome Jefferson, 39, had a trial on five counts of 3rd degree sexual abuse rescheduled for July 6. The action came after attorney Kevin O’Hare was allowed to withdraw as Jefferson’s attorney. Kevin Gaul, State Public Defender’s Special Defense Unit, was appointed to represent Jefferson in the case. Jefferson was charged on Oct. 9, 2013, by Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police. The ruling also said both the prosecution and defense agreed this case should be heard before a separate one in which Jefferson faces a 1st degree murder charge. In that case, Jefferson is accused in the death of his wife Kerri O’Clair Jefferson in a case filed by Tama Police on May 27, 2014. A trial which was underway with jury selection in early December, 2014, was halted when District Court Judge Stephen Jackson Jr. acted on a motion by the defense. Time was sought by the defense to study the jury pool because it was believed Native Americans were not represented in sufficient number in the pool. Kerri Jefferson, 32, was allegedly killed in Tama on Sept. 25, 2013. Dustin Jefferson’s mother, Ginger Lea Jefferson, 58, was sentenced to life in prison on a 1st degree murder conviction in July, 2014 in the death of her daughter-in-law. Dustin Jefferson is being held in the Tama County Jail on a $1 million bail on the murder charge and $30,000 on the sex abuse charges. Todd Allen Bachman, 44, Marshalltown, pleaded guilty to credit card fraud. Judgment was deferred for two years and Bachman was placed on probation for a two year period to the 6th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services. A $750 civil penalty was suspended. He was directed to pay $2,462 restitution to the victim. Bachman was arrested on Nov. 14, 2014, by Toledo Police on the original charge. Theron Dale Garcia, 21, Toledo, pleaded guilty to violation of the Iowa Sex Offender Registry regulations. He was sentenced to one day in jail with credit for one day already served and fined $625. Garcia was charged on Dec. 8, 2014, by the Tama County Sheriff’s Office.

Before Judge Stephen B. Jackson Jr.: Edward Curtis Ohrt, 51, Gladbrook, pleaded guilty to 1st offense drunken driving. He was sentenced to two days in jail, fined and assessed court costs totaling $1,798 and directed to complete drinking driver’s school. Ohrt was charged on Sept. 1, 2014, in Gladbrook by the Tama County Sheriff’s Office.
