The Weekly Scoop: Edition 5

Our state is on the right path. Earning the respect of the people must be maintained if we wish to trust state government, seeking solutions and creating laws to allow surrounding midwestern states to follow our example. The low House is doing just that!

There were great results from the Transportation Committee, with HF257 and HF258 passing the House and will now move on to the senate. They update lowa’s code to meet federal regulations and allow some third-party testing for CDL commercial driving requirements. The subcommittee chaired by Representative Derek Wulf voted to support passage of HSB27, now HF 335. This bill creates restricted CDL licenses valid for 210 days, and good for 150 miles within a farm operation. Farmers will have more flexibility in hiring seasonal ag labor with this restricted CD licensing.

SF 181 was an active topic on the House floor with the Property Tax Rollback Calculation error. I want to be clear that this error has been fixed to prevent a property tax increase with the bill proposed by the Senate and passed by the House. To address concerns of local governments, the bill has been amended to give local governments a one month extension to reset their budgets for the fiscal 2023 year.

Late in the week, I welcomed some of my constituents from A.B.A.T.E. of lowa to the State House. A.B.A.T.E. of lowa is a dedicated group promoting the safety by riding motorcycles on the roads. It was great visiting with them and seeing what’s to come in summer of 2023.

It was also a delight greeting several students from low universities to the State Capitol. It was inspiring to greet and talk with students from the University of Northern lowa. It amazes me how many opportunities are provided to help ensure great success for the next generation, with the quality of leadership from our colleges and universities. lowa will always be a home for those willing to help others.
