Marilyn Jean (Meggers) Cowell

Marilyn Jean (Meggers) Cowell of Des Moines, passed away October 11, 2023, surrounded by the love of her family. Marilyn was born November 25, 1929, in Garwin, Iowa, to Arthur and Helen Meggers. Marilyn attended The Gates Business College in Waterloo, Iowa. During her time in school, she taught accordion lessons at the Music House where she met her husband, Donald L. Cowell. Marilyn spent 27 years working as an executive assistant for the State of Iowa. During her retirement, she enjoyed bowling, ceramics, water aerobics and traveling. She also volunteered at the Iowa Hall of Pride and at Capital View Elementary school reading with the students. She was a member of Kiwanis as well as various church groups and organizations.

Marilyn enjoyed living on an acreage until the summer of 2019 when she moved to an assisted living apartment at The Gardens at Luther Park.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Don, her parents and sisters, Janyce (Norman) Stephenson and Carma Lou (Dan) Beck.

She is survived by her son, John (Laurie) Cowell, daughter, Susan (Steven) Gullord, granddaughters: Sarah (Jason) Flynn, Andrea (James) Weikert, Dr. Shelley (Mark) Watts and two great-grandsons, Kaden and Connor Flynn. The family would like to thank Luther Park for their compassionate care.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 17 at 10 a.m. at Iles Grandview Funeral home 3211 Hubbell Avenue, Des Moines with funeral services beginning at 11 a.m. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery will immediately follow the funeral service.
