Joel Andrew Baumgartner, 64

Joel Andrew Baumgartner, 64, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, surrounded by his family. He was born on February 11, 1958, in Oelwein, the son of Vernon and Lois (Bruns) Baumgartner. Joel was raised and educated in Strawberry Point and was a 1977 graduate of Starmont High School.

Joel worked in construction and farmed. His favorite job was working at PCI in Reinbeck, where he worked until the time of his death. Joel also worked with his brother, Jim, hand in hand on the farm and for various employers throughout the years.

Joel was a wonderful storyteller and was often called “Barn Cat” for various adventures. He enjoyed tractor pulls, antique tractors, mushroom and deer hunting and fishing. Joel liked traveling to visit his family. He loved his family and especially cherished spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his four children: Matthew (Sara Akers) Baumgartner, of Newport Beach, California, Mitchel (Haley) Baumgartner, of Marion, Abigail Hott and Ashley Hott, both of Newport Beach, California; his mother, Lois Bockenstedt, of Edgewood; two grandchildren, Kaysen and Breckin Baumgartner; one brother, James (Karen) Baumgartner, of Strawberry Point; niece, Jessica Helmrich, of Coggon; nephew, Kyle (Kelly) Baumgartner, of Strawberry Point; four great-nephews, Blaine, Sullivan, Jensen and Harrison; and special cousins and friends.

Joel was preceded in death by his father, Vernon; his children’s mother, Pamela Becker; uncle and aunt, Louis and Edna Baumgartner; and other aunts and uncles.

Funeral Service: Was held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at St. Sebald Lutheran Church in rural Strawberry Point, with Pastor Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiating.

Visitation: Was held from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point, Iowa. Friends may also call one-hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

Interment: St. Sebald Lutheran Cemetery, rural Strawberry Point, Iowa.
