Mary J. Sieverding

Mary J. Sieverding, age 83 of Iowa City passed away peacefully with her family by her side Thursday, August 5, 2021, at Legacy Pointe in Iowa City where she has resided.

Mary Jean Kinsella was born May 2, 1938, in Ames, Iowa the daughter of Lyle and Thelma (Bruce) Kinsella. She attended school in Des Moines graduating from St. Joseph Academy in 1956. On November 28, 1959, she married Wayne F. “Bud” Sieverding at St. Johns Cathedral in Des Moines. Mary and Bud raised their family in Garwin, Iowa. Upon Bud’s retirement they moved to Marshalltown in 1992. In 2000 the couple moved to Solon to be closer to family members, and then to the Iowa City area. The couple were members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hills. Bud died on October 25, 2005, with Mary staying in this area until her death.

Mary was very creative. She loved to paint ceramics, and made Halloween costumes and many other craft projects. She was an avid reader. Mary was a stay-at-home mom and raised her 6 kids, while being very active in her church. Her greatest joy was watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. Mary was very generous and giving, volunteering for many church and community activities. She loved softball, and coached little league for her girls.

Her family includes six children and their families, Carol Clement (Jack dec.)and their children, Annaka Clement (Andy Loose), Emily Clement (Sean Nolan) and Eleanor Clement; Linda Knudtson (Kevin) and their children, Steven Knudtson, Katie Johnson (Sam), and David Knudtson; Nancy Waldschmidt (Mike) and their children, Alyssa Moran (Brian), Matthew Waldschmidt (Lauren), Clayton Waldschmidt (Sara Hauser) and Weston Waldschmidt; and their grandchildren, Levi Waldschmidt and Gwendolyn Moran; Michael Sieverding (Lora) and their children, Lucas Sieverding (Katelyn Thorne), Jacob Sieverding and Elena Sieverding; Cindi Weyer and her son, Nathan Weyer; and Eric Sieverding (Chelle) and their children, Rebecca Sieverding and Jeffrey Sieverding; Mary’s sisters, Pat Cain, Janet Harney (Russ) and Kathleen Kinsella-Sims and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Jeffrey David Sieverding; son-in-law, Jack Clement; brother and his wife, Richard Kinsella and Jeanne; and brother-in-law, John Cain.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11am Monday, August 16, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hills where there will be a time of visitation one hour prior to the services. Burial will be at a later date at the Garwin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Mary’s memory to Iowa City Hospice.
