Marvin Wendel

Marvin Harold Wendel, 84 of Gladbrook, IA passed away Friday, September 4, 2020 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, IA. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at the church. Interment will be at Crystal Cemetery in rural Toledo, IA. Memorials may be directed to PUCC or the family for a State Fair memorial. Marvin was born February 8, 1936 to Nick and Margaret (Delfs) Wendel in Marshalltown, IA. The family lived on a farm by Lincoln and moved to a farm west of Gladbrook in 1941. Marvin went to country school #4 and Gladbrook school after 5th grade. He was a 1954 graduate of Gladbrook High School playing the coronet for 8 years in band. Marvin was confirmed into the Peace United Church of Christ and remained a lifelong member, serving on the board at different times. He started farming after High School with his uncle and father while taking a short mechanical course by mail. Marvin was united in marriage to Judy Schade on June 2, 1962 in Gladbrook. They moved to their current homestead in 1963. Marvin belonged to the Gladbrook Jaycees and was a sponsor for PUCC Junior YF when the children were in school. He started working part time for Schade Lime & Rock and bought the business after the death of Les. Marvin loved farming and raising livestock in the early years. John Deere was the best tractor and Ford was the best vehicle. He was a great dancer and loved going to dances on Saturday nights. Marvin was appointed to the Tama County Magistrate Nominating Committee in 2000. Taking roadtrips after retiring was something he really enjoyed as long as ice cream was involved.

Marvin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judy, a daughter, Lisa (Randy) Markley of Ames, IA, a son, Myron (Danielle) Wendel of Las Vegas, NV, six grandchildren; Jessi (Ed) Lozinski, Shane Markley, Jina McBroom, Carl (Sara) Markley, Mattie Wendel, Nick Wendel, six great grandchildren; Zane, Grace, Andrew, Mariska , Michal, and Maja. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
