Esther A. Goos, 93, passed away at Westbrook Acres Nursing Home in Gladbrook, IA, on Wednesday, October 14, 2015. Funeral service was 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 19, 2015, at Christ Lutheran Church in Gladbrook. Pastor Bruce Zimmerman officiated the services. Burial followed at Gethmann Cemetery and a luncheon at the Gladbrook Memorial Building. Visitation was from 5:00 p.m., until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 18, 2015, at the Gladbrook Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christ Lutheran Church Organ Fund. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Gladbrook Chapel of Anderson Funeral Homes. Esther Ann Marie Goos was born on August 27, 1922 to Albert and Florence (Johnson) Schultz in Marion Twp., Marshall Co., Iowa as the only daughter of eight children. She attended school in Marshall Co. and graduated from Conrad High School (1940) and Evangelical School of Nursing, Marshalltown (1944). She practiced nursing in Marshalltown and Eldora Hospitals. Esther and her family moved to Gladbrook in 1951, where she started working in Dr. Lawrence G. Schaeferle’s office, the Gladbrook Clinic. In 1955, she took a graduate course at the University of Minnesota in Public Health Nursing and was Tama Co. Public Health nurse five years, then returned to the Gladbrook Clinic until retiring in 1981. Esther married Frederick G. (Benny) Rabe, Sept. 10, 1948 in Marshalltown and they had three children. Mr. Rabe died in 1958. She married Evan F. Goos, Feb. 9, 1962 in Gladbrook and they made their home in Gladbrook. Mr. Goos died in 2004. Esther was instrumental in starting the Girl Scout Troop in Gladbrook, taught Sunday School for 17 years, and played the organ for several years at Christ Lutheran Church, was active in church organizations and Secretary-Treasurer of AAL Branch #4706 for many years. She was the family historian for the Schultz-Kaufmann reunion for many years. Esther enjoyed sewing, quilting, reading, muaic, and doing word puzzles. She is survived by a son, Louis F. (Kathy) Rabe, Crystal Lake, IL; two daughters, Ruth (Bobbie) Brewster, Cedar Rapids, IA, Susan Rabe, Des Plaines, IL; one step-daughter, Teresa (Kenneth) Markwitz, Mansfield, TX, son-in-law David Kacer, Toledo, IA; seven grandchildren: Benjamin (Sarah) and Andrew (Alexis) Rabe, Megan (Andrew) Chyterbok, Travis (Rebecca) Brewster and Deliese (Israel) Brewster Acosta; Jennifer (Steven) Purvis and Geoffrey Kacer; 13 great-grandchildren: Drake, Reganne and Kaid Brewster; Gavin Purvis; Hayden, Cooper and Ellie Rabe; Naomi , Jordan and Brendan Acosta, Connor Rabe, James and Owen Chyterbok; in-laws: Beverly Schultz , Pearl, Arlene, MaryLee, Marcella and George (Pat) Goos, and Alice Condor and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her step-daughter Pamela Kacer, her parents, her brothers Otto (in infancy), Edwin, William, Robert, Carl (in infancy), Theodore and Paul Schultz; and several in-laws’ spouses.. The family would like to thank their cousins, Jerry and Jan Schultz , Carl and Deb Wheeler and Gary & Janet Ekvall and friends, Darrel and Jeanne Paustian and Chuck and Sherry Delfs for the help and care they gave to Esther, and also the staff at Westbrook Acres Nursing Home.
