Edith Whannel, 84
Edith Whannel, 84, of Conrad, IA, formerly of Gladbrook, IA passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Westbrook Acres, in Gladbrook. Funeral services were 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Peace United Church of Christ, in Gladbrook. Visitation was 9:30 a.m., until the time of the services at the church. Interment will be at Badger Hill Cemetery, in rural Gladbrook. The Gladbrook Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes has been entrusted with arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to www.andersonfhs.com Edith was one of six children born to Carl Raymond and Laura G. (Boyd) Denbow on March 7, 1931, in Marshalltown. She was raised on a farm north of Gladbrook where her great nephew now lives. She attended a country school and graduated from Gladbrook High School, in 1949. She played basketball and was in band and other school activities. Edith was united in marriage to Wayne P. Whannel at the Peace United Church of Christ on May 6, 1951. After Wayne returned from service in 1953, they lived on the Russell Glass farm where she loved collecting birdhouses, working in her garden and flower beds, and raising her family. She was a wonderful cook and passed some of her talents to her daughters and grandchildren. Edith helped with 4-H and was a Jr. Auxiliary Leader when her girls were younger. Edith loved to attend any event her grandchildren were involved in. Wayne and Edith moved to Conrad in 1981. In 1983 she worked at BCLUW School as kitchen cook and then went to Oakview Nursing Home as housekeeper. Most recently she was employed with BCLUW elementary as “recess cop,” before retiring in 2009. While at the elementary she was known as grandma to many little ones. She was a member of Beaman United Methodist Church and Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary. Edith will be missed by three daughters; Kathleen “Kathy” Chizek of rural Beaman, IA, Terri (Dean) Seaton of Eldora, IA, Linda (Scott) Fisher of rural Conrad, IA; six grandchildren, Kyle Chizek, Jason (Danielle Eaton) Seaton, Chad (Missy) Seaton, Jamie (Dan Kruger) Fisher, Nicole (Colton James) Fisher, Kayla Fisher, two great-grandsons; Mason Seaton and Conner Seaton; one brother and two sisters, Lois Gannon of Iowa City, IA, Dick (Jolene) Denbow of Gladbrook, IA, and Barb (Dick) Kienzle of Duluth, MN and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Laura; husband, Wayne who passed away in 1987; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Dorothy Denbow, sister and brother-in-law, Marge and Ray Dreesen, brother-in-law, Don Gannon; son-in-law, Kevin Chizek; and great-granddaughter, Gracie Jo Seaton.
