Leo W. Barfels

Leo W. Barfels, 81, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Wyoming, Reinbeck and Grinnell, died at Windhaven Assisted Living of Western Home Communities on Wednesday, March 7, 2012.

He was born October 26, 1930 in Lincoln, Iowa, son of Walter and Catherine Staack Barfels. Leo graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1948.

He married Kathryn Schwartz on March 26, 1949 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She died March 12, 2010. Leo had worked at Farmers Co-Op in Lincoln; owned a Standard Oil Service Station in Grinnell, and was a mechanic for Union Pacific Railroad in Laramie, Wyoming, retiring in 1992.

He is survived by son Danny (Kathy) Barfels of Cedar Falls, daughters: Sandra (Charlie) Weaver of Orlando, Fla. and Susan Soderberg of Laramie, Wyo.; seven grandchildren: Kristen (Mark) Oliver, Ashley (Aaron) Prieksat, Natalie (Joseph) Spivey, Tyler (Kim) Weaver, Nels Soderberg, Hanni (Dusty) Scott, and Dane Soderberg; five great grandchildren: Maxwell Oliver, Sierra Soderberg, Jackson Scott, Ava Prieksat and Kathryn Spivey.

Leo is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister Nadine McCrary.

A public Masonic Service was held Monday, March 12, 2012 at Locke Funeral Home in Waterloo by Gladbrook Olivet Lodge #436 A.F. & A.M. and Waterloo Martin Lodge #624 A.F. & A.M.
