Marilyn A. Thoms

Marilyn A. Thoms, 78, of Gladbrook and Traer, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at Ivinson Memorial Hospital, Laramie, Wyoming, of a sudden illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at Amity Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Crystal Cemetery, rural Toledo, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established. Marilyn Ann Thoms was born December 4, 1932 at Gladbrook, IA, daughter of Edward and Emma Chesick Claussen. She received her education in country school and later Gladbrook High School. She then worked on the farm and on June 4, 1954 she was united in marriage to Harry Thoms at the Amity Presbyterian Church. Harry and Marilyn made their home in La Porte City for a time before returning to make their home on the family farm near Gladbrook. While attending the graduation for one of her grandchildren in Laramie, WY her death came suddenly at the Ivinson Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness. Marilyn was an active member of the Amity Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, currently was serving as a Deacon and also taught Sunday School for several years. She also was an active member of the Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary and Lincoln Am vets Auxiliary where she held various offices included serving as President. She also took an active role in at the state, district and county levels. Marilyn also was very active in the Clydesdale Breeders of The US and Iowa Draft Horses Association where she was inducted in the hall of fame for those organizations. She was a member of the Tama County Fair Board and was inducted in the State 4 H hall of fame. Marilyn also served many hours volunteering her time with the Iowa Veterans Home for 25 years and in 2009 both Harry and Marilyn served as Grand Marshalls for the Corn Carnival Parade in Gladbrook. She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband Harry, , two daughters Becky (Steve) Fevold of Gladbrook and Dianne (Eric) Brown of Zearing, IA one son Roger (Linda) Thoms of Aaronsburg, PA and seven grandchildren, Katie and Cody Fevold, Will, Sam and Zach Brown and Ethan and Jason Thoms.
