Evelyn L. Bern

Evelyn L. Bern, 91, of Traer, formerly of Gladbrook, Iowa, died Saturday, May 21, 2011, at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer, Iowa. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 24, at the Gladbrook United Methodist Church in Gladbrook. Burial will be at a later date in Crystal Cemetery, rural Toledo, Iowa. Overton Funeral home was in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.overtonservice.com. A memorial fund has been established. Evelyn L. Bern was born September 18, 1919 in rural Tama County, IA to Frank and Mary Patava Chizek. She received her education in rural schools in Tama County and on September 1, 1943 she was united in marriage to Marvin Bern at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Evelyn and Marvin made their home farming all their married life near Gladbrook, Lincoln and Traer. In later years Evelyn moved into Gladbrook where she lived until January of 2009 when she moved to the Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer. Her death came at the care center on Saturday morning, May 21, 2011 at the age of 91 years. She was a member of the Gladbrook United Methodist Church, UMW and the Crystal Friendship Club. Evelyn’s love was her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting, making afghans, playing cards at Shade’s, baking kolaches and cookies and spending time in her flower garden. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Marvin in 1970. She is survived by her daughter Bonnie (Robert) Murty of rural Traer, three grandchildren Sandi, Steve and Scott, great grandchildren Ross, Conner, Layne, Rhianna and Skyler, one brother George (Phyllis) Chizek of Gladbrook, brothers-in-law Elmer Bern and Leslie Bern both of Lincoln and a sister-in-law Viola Vasey of Grundy Center, IA
