Mary Maddyle (Laughlin) Davis

Mary Maddyle (Laughlin) Davis passed from this world, Monday, May 2, 2011, at her current home in Gladbrook, Iowa. Mary lived a full life reaching 91 years of age passing peacefully of natural causes. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 14, 2011, at Gladbrook United Methodist Church in Gladbrook, IA. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. The Goettsch Funeral Home in Gladbrook has been entrusted with the arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to www.vogelfuneralhomes.com Mary was born October 14, 1919, to Lloyd L. and Victoria U. (Robinson) Laughlin at their home in rural Lancaster County, Missouri. Mary attended country school and graduated from high school in Garden Grove, Iowa having received Normal Teacher Training. She taught country school before marrying her sweetheart, neighbor Harold R. Davis, on February 29, 1939. Mary and Harold were tenant farmers with their parents through the Great Depression and WWII. They eventually purchased a farm in Wayne County, south of Allerton, Iowa where they remained for over 50 years. Mary substituted for the Allerton School District and worked for the Lorraine Lingerie Factory in Leon, Iowa. She was always willing to share her many talents with family, friends, church, youth, and community groups. She lived the majority of her life in central southern Iowa until the couple retired to Corydon, Ia. in June 1998. Harold died March 18, 2000 and Mary moved to Gladbrook in October 2007. Mary is preceded in death by her father, mother, and husband Harold, as well as two adult and one toddler brothers; three sister-in-laws, four brother in-laws and two nephews. She is survived by her son and his family – James H. (Sunee) Davis and granddaughter Jamie of Loveland, Ohio; daughter-in-law Kathleen Davis of West Chester, Ohio; grandson Brian (Jill) Davis and great-granddaughter Brianna of Midlothian, Texas; granddaughter Natalie (Brian) Wilhelm and two great-grandsons Aydin and Tyler of Knoxville, Tennessee. She is also survived by her daughter and her family – Avriel L. (Paul) Koester of Gladbrook, Ia, grandson Aaron Olsen of Sacramento, California, grandson Matthew (Elizabeth) Koester and two great-grandsons Ryan and Owen; granddaughter Amanda (Sean) Gehring and great-grandson Austin all of Gladbrook. She leaves behind two sisters and a brother-in-law: Isabel Marshall of West Des Moines, Ia. and Josephine and Jack Elliott of Ankeny, Ia. Numerous nieces and nephews share in mourning the loss of this sweet lady. Mary enjoyed cooking for her extended family, reading, gardening, sewing, teaching Sunday school, attending club, and doing kind deeds for others. She will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to know her. Her body will be interned on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., next to Harold’s at the Humeston Cemetery, Humeston, Ia, and her soul will rest with Christ for eternity.
